I don't know if others would agree but when I buy barred rocks from a straight run, I have learned that the males are lighter in color. They seems to be more silver/black as they start to feather out. The spot on their heads are irregular too if they could be male. It is difficult to tell by...
Any other guesses?
I called the store and found out that they buy from Estes so the options are limited.

I actually ordered mine from PetEdge. It was originally used as a baby gate when training my dog. It is 12' long and I have an open floor plan in my home so regular baby gates wouldn't work. I ordered this "play yard" for dogs and used it. It can be used while chickens are being supervised...
Interesting! I checked his face and I hadn't noticed how puffy he was. Now that it has been pointed out, I am seeing the EE traits. I appreciate all the help.
I live in a windy area too. It is great for ventilation but not so good for keeping a coop draft-free. A tarp is fine as protection from the elements. If it's just windy enough to blow the feathers, it probably isn't a big deal, but if the gusts are strong enough to cause balance issues, then...
I had originally used 1" chicken wire. When I found this website, I read all the horror stories about predators and changed everything to hardware cloth.
Until last week, I hadn't ever had a predator. I've had chickens for over a year and had ducks prior to that for over 6 years. I wondered...
I do not like my RIR. My Australorps, Barred Rocks, Easter Eggers, and Orpingtons are all pretty friendly and get along fine with each other. The RIR's are always picking on these other breeds. Mine even kill small birds that land in the yard and drag them under my deck.
None of the other eggs have hatched. All are very heavy. She took her single chick on a field trip out of her secret nest. She didn't leave the coop with the chick but I moved her. I moved the whole box, nest included.
Her little chick is adorable! It is always under her wing and it's so...
When deep-cleaning our coop, we noticed that one of the hens had started a nest. We cleared this nest out but we didn't realize she had stolen other eggs and had a secret nest. We have a few small dog houses in our chicken coop or chicken shed. She had stolen a bantam egg and a couple regular...
