Interesting. Yes the above bird is mine and it is a hatchery bird. It really doesn't have typical rooster features like I would expect, but possibly a badly colored pullet. Hmm.
You want to get her off that slick cardboard and onto something she can grip better. That will cause splay leg. Use rubber shelf liner sprinkled VERY lightly with shavings or none at all (they machine wash easily). Good luck, I had a tough hatch on Easter Day, had to put 2 babies down and one...
pixiejayne ....still BYC illiterate Lol (big surprise ) search me on FB: Joni Farrington, I'd love to add you! my "about" says NICU RN, BSN :) I'd love to keep in touch!
Adding to this thread for anyone that may read it in the future (I've learned a ton reading old posts on here in searches!) I ordered an "Incubating chickens at home" book, and realized not only my 3 power outages impacted my splay leg babies, but I also made some grave errors that were the MORE...
Oh my they are so big by 4 weeks! This always leaves my mind that they grow. Which is why I end up with more Which of the trip was your splay leg baby? You'd never know it now. What breed are they all? Thanks for sharing! :)
pixiejayne quoted you because you followed me :) here is the latest in case you were interested
Two of the three had to be put down. One practically passed on its own, the other was "fine" but clearly NEVER going to be ok since she couldn't get off her hocks and her deformities were so bad. We...
On further research, one of them has a rotated femur. Not responding at all to taping and is not doing well at all. Will be put down tonight for sure. The other one still iffy but she's eating and drinking on her own now. In case she gets put down, we got Peter (the fully recouped chick) 2...
Thanks for checking in! I have nobody else that understands me lol. We were about to cull the runt, came home from dinner (I had to get away from it all) and then she was up and about pecking food off the ground! The smaller two are still getting around, I'm unsure if they are getting to water...
This JUST happened to us on Easter Day. BIG chick that had pipped then zipped for 8+ hours. Peeping was less so I took him out and assisted. He is now 5 days old and great! 2 days of splay/spraddle leg taping and he's awesome now :)
Happy to say the biggest one appears to be out of the woods, eating and drinking. Even drank from a chicken nipple on his own! Second smallest is also getting around and pecking at crumble. The runt is currently peeping NONSTOP and seems in severe distress. I've swaddled her and out her in...
I have toes taped on 2 and may do other. They were curled and not a good "platform"...I think they are doing better? I was up until midnight giving them feed with a syringe and electrolytes. "Stuffed" them (0.5 ml softened chick feed) and left them in their therapy crates all night upright.
All good ideas, thank you! The 4 were perfectly healthy fully formed chicks that died in the shell. I still think all those power outages had something to do with it. Even though I did get them quickly plugged in, they were still carried a ways to my car, draft, water sloshing etc :\ I'm going...
I turned off the incubator today...4 eggs that did not hatch had perfectly formed chicks, that looked fully developed but did not hatch. Is 17 eggs in a brinsea 20 too much? Americauna eggs. I'm still thinking my power outages were a big part. Even though I lugged them to my car each time to...
