Hen heavy breathing with beak open, walking in a crouch

Thanks for the advice, Judy. I will try worming. I don't think this is something she's going to snap out of on her own so it is worth a try.

Hen heavy breathing with beak open, walking in a crouch

Compared to my other Australorp her abdomen might be slightly larger and is firm, not squishy. I checked for an egg and did not feel anything. Her comb seems shriveled-is that possible? It's much smaller than in photos from last summer. Her wattles are bright red, the comb less so and the skin...

Hen heavy breathing with beak open, walking in a crouch

One evening about 2 weeks ago I noticed a 2 1/2 year old hen was breathing heavily with her beak open after she jumped up on to the roost. The next morning she was still breathing the same and was huddled in the corner of the pen and didn't want to go out and free range. I brought her in the...

Easter Egger finally laid her first eggs and they are.....brown

I'm in the same boat with you, Karen. My second EE laid her first egg today and it's brown too. I couldn't believe it! Oh well, at least she started laying. My other EE started over a month ago.

Please help! Being harrased by township in michigan

Who turned you in? If there are no complaints - noise, smell etc. what's the big deal? I can't stand it that someone will try and dictate what we have as pets.

    Are chickens domestic pets

I am currently trying to amend my Homeowner Association rules to have chickens included in the category of "household pets". Right now chickens are listed in the prohibited group, but the rules were written 30 years ago when chickens were raised primarily as a product and not as something you...

    Winterizing question

Hi Trixie. I'm in East Hampton, where are you? I'm new to chickens too. You'll get all the info you need here. I've got the 4" wide roosts to keep the toes warm, and plan to keep a south facing window open for ventilation.

    Do chickens lower property values?

Quote: Thank you, SS for the advice. The realtor statememnts is a good idea. I did bring copies of magazine and newspaper articles, I made a packet for each member, and I brought photos which no one looked at either. I did make the coop in the same style as my house as I knew that is a...

    Do chickens lower property values?

The board of our HOA met today (I am a member) to discuss my 13 week old chickens. The Cc&R prohibit coops and poultry but allow "household pets such as cats and dogs" so I went prepared with articles, photos and lots of BYC printouts to show that the 30 year old rules are out of date and...

City says chickens ok, HOA says no, what to do?

Wow. The wording in my CC&R is exactly the same. I've had 6 chicks since June. I was found out in July and I have to go before the HOA board this Saturday. Our HOA is 30 years old and I too am planning to explain that they are my pets, I have newspaper + magazine articles, BYC newsletters, and...

I did it.! No laughing please!

Quote: That must be an adorable sight! Coop looks great and chicks don't care even if everything is crooked. ( I know from experience )

Shredded Paper for bedding, floor covering??

I've been using shredded paper and newspaper since the chicks were 4 days old. It works really well and is free! The only problem I've heard of is if your chickens eat the paper, but I don't think an occasional piece would be a problem.

    Irene Temporary containment

Good job, and it's worth the peace of mind. Mine are staying in the basement another night. The wind is still gusting and if I don't feel comfortable walking around the yard I'm not putting them back in the coop under the trees!

I'm gonna die... a huricane is coming tonight!

I brought mine into the basement: They are quite upset- alot of honking going on. I'm trying to settle them down by gradually moving the lamp farther away- like the sun setting.

So we are probably getting a hurricane what to do

Mine will be staying in the basement. As of now they say Irene will be a category 1 or tropical storm when it gets up here (Long Island NY) but I'm way on the east end so I'm not taking any chances!
