Incubating eggs that have been sat on by a broodie.

the ones I cracked open don't have any signs of blood spots. None of my eggs do. I collect until my turner is full and then turn it on (3 days tops). I'm starting to think that maybe my rooster isn't doing his job!

    Drop in egg production

Look up some recipes for homemade flock block and adding some oystershell or crushed eggshells to it. I've found that if you give them something to occupy them with it gets a bit better. Also I found if they happen to run out of water that was also a big trigger so make sure they always have...

Incubating eggs that have been sat on by a broodie.

I just candled my eggs last night that are due on Mothersday and over 50% showed little to nothing there :(. Now I have a theory but I was wondering if anybody knew if this would affect the eggs. I have two broodie hens that sit in the favorite egg laying corner. I am at work all day and...

    Drop in egg production

They are around the age that they would have their first molt. But you would know if they're molting because they will have bald patches usually starting on their face/neck areas. You could also have an egg eater on your hands. they eat shell and all so its hard to find out unless you catch...

    Introducing a new roo

I had six barred Rocks and eight Maran's, when I got my new roo I just put him in their pen and stood there watching for a while. The top hen pecked at him a little but after a bit he pecked back and everything was fine. Now you should probably quarantine him before but I hate leaving them by...

Broody hen has abandoned fake eggs but still broody

I think she will know that they aren't real eggs. I've had several broody hens and they have always kicked the golfballs out and also any unfertilized eggs. I would get frustrated if I had 12-15 eggs under her (my hens are pretty large) and she kicked one or two out and they were cold. but...

    dogs and chickens

I have two border collie crosses. . . and they LOVE chasing animals. I have two kittens and a bunch of chickens and at first they chased the cats a bit until they kept getting into trouble. Now they just chase the neighbours cats when they come over and they know which ones they have to be...

How many eggs under broody hen??

Well . . . I settled on 10 eggs . . . until I had another hen join her two days ago and she took half of her eggs . . haha. So now they have 14 between the two of them.

Has anyone's Hens gone broody yet

I had a second hen joining in . . . so now they have 14 eggs that they split between the two of them. Don't want to give them more because then the eggs will be hatching too far apart :(

Has anyone's Hens gone broody yet

I have one! after 5 days of her determination I decided to let her keep some of her sister's eggs (as she's not laying right now). So far so good!

How many eggs under broody hen??

I'll check every day and see how the nest looks then and go from there. I will have to mark the older eggs too so I don't accidently take one of those out! She isn't bothered by me going near her at all as I've lifted her off her nest and set her back on it the last 5-6 days or so and is still...

How many eggs under broody hen??

The nesting area is not a box its in the corner of the coop with a lot of straw. . . so they aren't sitting on top of each other exactly . . . but beside each other. She just takes those eggs and rolls them under her. None of them bother her as she's one of the dominant hens. And I catch the...

How many eggs under broody hen??

My Partridge Rock hen has been sitting for a few days now and she seems very determined to hatch her own eggs. She has picked all her feathers off her belly to keep the eggs nice and warm. Her sisters lay their eggs on top of her as they have one favorite spot, and she collects them for her...

Entire flock abruptly stopped laying for no apparent reason, any ideas why?

I'm up in Canada and have Rocks as well. They are not really affected with the cold weather and I'm sure our winters are a lot colder then yours. The only thing I can think of is that something is spooking them. Maybe they hear a weird noise at night or during the day when you're gone...

    Black sliver in egg

fertilized eggs can have a line. . . which I thought was a sliver. If it is just a spot then its still fine to eat, some chickens have a small tiny defect in their laying system and will have a small blood clot in their eggs. No biggie though.

South Western Ontario - EE chicks?

I have two flocks, one is with a barred rock rooster and some partridge rock hens and one americauna cross hen (she's white with fluffy cheeks). The other flock is a hybrid layer rooster and light sussex hens. I am a little north of London, ON. If you are still looking for chicks in the...

    Black sliver in egg

Do you pick the eggs everyday? the black sliver sounds like an egg that has been incubated for a few days . . . I think there is a link on this site that shows candled eggs at each day of incubation and after a few days its a blood line (that's all), I'm assuming its a cooked blood line. I...

would a rat wipe out a whole bunch of chicks or just one

Rats generally do not go after the chickens. . . . the feed however, they will seek out. Weasels, possums and raccoons are the ones to look out for. They will wipe them out, but I hope none of those can get in your cellar! Good Luck!
