Thanks again, all of you. Interesting point, Popsicle! You know, I hadn't even thought about that! I'll have to check with my friend and see if any of the other chicks are showing peacombs and/or beards/muffs. I know at least a couple of the other chicks had very definite greenish legs, but I...
:sigh: Thank you all, I was afraid they might be cockerels. I know it's a bit early to tell for sure, but....
The chick that looks more Barred Rock definitely has either a Black Copper Marans or Ameraucana mother; those are the only kinds of hens my friend has. I know the darker chick is more...
Okay... again, both 6 weeks old.
Chick #1, Barred Rock over BCM:
And Chick #2, Barred Rock over either BCM or Ameraucana:
And a couple more of both, in case it helps:
Thanks again!
Edited to Add: Their Barred Rock daddy and chick #2 here looked very close to the same at this...
These 2 are 6 weeks old here, both from the same Barred Rock daddy. Mama for the darker chick was clearly one of my friends' Black Copper Marans hens (that chick even hatched out with the leg feathering already started); lighter chick could be from either a Copper Marans mama or an Ameraucana...
Great suggestions and advice: Thank you both so much! Sugar is not afraid of Pepper, the gal she arrived here with, so I'll set up something where the 2 of them can "room" together. And I'll call around about free pallets today, and check with the nearby motorcycle shop about a shipping...
I recently inherited two more hens from a friend. One of these gals, Sugar, had an incident a few months before wherein the friend's other hens pecked her pretty badly. She's doing fine, but another incident occurred here with my girls that added to her trauma, and I'm not sure she's ever going...
I got my very first pullets, 2 GSLs and 2 RIRs, from the local Big R store 5 days ago. I was told they had come in a week before, and that they were thus probably about 9 days old at that time. This morning, we noticed that all 4 girls are starting to get their combs coming in. Their wing...
Thank you so much for the URL, onebigglo1! I'll definitely check it out... the more I can learn now about the processes, the better I'll do when the time comes. I really appreciate it! :-)
Hi Folks,
Kind of a newbie here... had visited with you all about a year ago and I'm just now returning. I won a coop recently so will be getting my first chickies soon. I'm in Bend.
You mentioned a Facebook group? Could I ask what the actual group name is? I tried doing a search on Facebook...
Hi All! Stuck in suburbia here, but my darling hubby supplied me with 6 very nice raised garden beds, and I do additional goodies in pots. Here's this year's lineup:
Tomatoes (3 kinds), peppers, onions (3 kinds), scallions, lettuces (4 kinds), peas, snow peas, bush beans, carrots, spinach...
Hi Michelle! Nice to meet you! Sorry to say, I didn't make it to yours, but it sure looks like a sweet set-up! Hopefully next year (or maybe sooner?). Thanks for the link, your blog is fabulous! Nice write-up by Sunset, too; congrats!
Hi Folks, new member to the forum here. I'm in Bend, and I'd LOVE to attend the swap. No chickies for me yet, but hopefully soon. I'm in need of, well, everything (including the chickens!), and I'm wondering whether bringing plant starts (veggies and flowers) and some of my hand-crafted goodies...
Howdy, all! I'm Jodi, from Bend, Oregon. No girls yet, but hopefully soon! I'm gonna keep this short but sweet, as I have a LOT of reading to do, now that I found y'all. Thanks in advance for not kicking me out, and for all I'm gonna learn from all of you!
Yay, I found you! I'm a brand-spankin' new central Oregon member! Well, the brand-spankin' new refers to the member part; the Oregonian part is actually x 51 years now, and the central Oregon part is x 17 years, so not so "new" on those counts. At any rate, this being my first post and all, HI...
