In 2022 I ordered and received three Buckeyes (as well as other birds) from Cackle. One was a bit small and died within a few days, but the other two are still around, healthy, and happy hens. They are good layers, and their offspring have been healthy too. One of them is affectionately known as...
She has been back out with her buddies and was quite happy about it. She joined them in pecking at my boots and tugging at my hem.
Thanks for your help!

Ah, I was returning to ask how long she ought to be in! She is cheeping most pathetically, even with me nearby.
I haven't photos of the toe cuts, because they stopped bleeding quickly! But I can probably find them and dab Betadine on them. Then it's fine to get her back...
Went out and found a two-month old chick stuck between a fence and wall upside down. 😢 No idea how long she was like that; it had been several hours since I was out. Her head was not stuck downwards, and it looks like other than cutting her toes a bit, there are no other injuries. She seems to...
So Queenie went back out a couple of days ago, as she was looking and acting much better and complaining a bit (it was also ridiculously beautiful for January). She is definitely happier and eating more than she had been while in the infirmary, despite missing having all that scrambled egg to...
Just wanted to update. She tucked into her mash and electrolyte water nicely this morning. She seems subdued, but no worse than yesterday. The beak breathing is nearly entirely gone--it is only very occasional now and not so dramatic, either (her beak isn't opening as widely; just a tiny bit)...
Yes, the breathing is what concerns me. I'm actually going back and forth on getting some Tylosin, too, though I do have enrofloxacin (I never ever spell that right...) on hand.
We have done this with a hen before; maybe three times for an Easter Egger who lived for nearly a year after she...
I'm so sorry Marcy did not make it. You absolutely did the best you could, though, with all the special care and your best attempts to keep her comfortable. Even when we cannot fend off death, I think many animals can tell we're trying to help them.
RIP, Marcy.
Thank you. We have been experiencing very dramatic temperature swings over the past several weeks.
All of this said—after I did the other chicken care things, I popped in with a little more mash with a bit of NutriDrench in it for her (which she may not eat now, since I used it to lure her to...
Anyone? When I dropped off a little mash at noon, she had eaten some of her other food and her color was a bit better. I also put a bit of NutriDrench in her water.
Thanks!
My 3.5 year old Welsummer did not come to greet me this morning, but stayed on a perch by herself in the run. She is pale, her head feathers ruffled up, and making these odd gasping motions. Her breathing does not sound labored. I put her into the infirmary crate with food and water (she did eat...
One of our week old chicks is shaking her head, especially when we take her out of the brooder to check over and pet her. It doesn't seem to happen as much in the brooder! She has been in there scratching around with her siblings, and hasn't shaken her head once while I have been watching. No...
When my nephews were young enough to really like marbles, the really big ones were difficult to find for some reason. My eyes are still peeled for them from that era!
Wanted to throw in some for taxes.
The new peeps would like to know: Would you listen to this album? (I suspect it's New Wave.)
This was last week; they're happily playing in the brooder now.
Thank you! My brooder was ready to go, at least! They were most happy to get into it the morning after the last chick hatched.
A giant marble sounds pretty fancy. ;) Mine just get a handful of well-scrubbed decorative flat glass pebbles!
