Can a chicken lay more than one egg a day?

We have 3 Red Star hens and have been getting 5 eggs a day this week! ??? I thought they would slow down on egg production with the cold weather here. Strange.

    Can hens lay empty shells?

Just this week my son brought an egg into the house and accidentally broke it in our kitchen. It was empty. There was a tiny bit of liquid inside but thats it! ??? So strange!

Hello! I'm new to chickens (just brought them home about 3 weeks ago). What in the world are we supposed to do with them when it is SO hot and humid??? I have plenty of water out there and they are free ranging in our suburban yard with plenty of shade. Will they be alright? We are in a...

Free range in winter...how does it work or does it?

I live in MN too and we just brought our layers home less than 2 weeks ago. I hadn't thought of frozen eggs yet! Do you have any tips for me on how to make things easier in our lovely MN winter? What do you do with your water? Heat it?

New to chickens! Bumblefoot? Frequency of "issues"?

They do not have any bugs that I can see. My husband and I have both checked them. We are feeding them some kind of chicken feed (17 or 18%?) that was recommended by Fluegel Elevator Feed Store, grit, fruits from the kitchen & of course all the bugs, grubs, worms they find in the yard. I have...

New to chickens! Bumblefoot? Frequency of "issues"?

Thanks dawg53. I'll keep an eye on things and maybe do the soaking that was mentioned previously. We did buy "used" chickens that are 8 months old. I really didn't feel that I was ready to try out baby chicks since I am busy with babies of my own. It sounded like too much care for our...

New to chickens! Bumblefoot? Frequency of "issues"?

Thanks for the help! I'll have to change the bedding out tomorrow. Would the "egg" look like poop though? I'll have to look at your link about bumble foot and hopefully we can get by without cutting things open. That really doesn't sound fun. I'm off to give her another bath because the...

New to chickens! Bumblefoot? Frequency of "issues"?

I forgot to mention - My hens have a coop and I use straw for bedding. Maybe not the best choice? They are "free-range" as much as possible. Pretty much we leave the coop door open whenever we are home. I am a stay-at-home mom so that means it is open most of the time.
