Flicker loo--how do you tell if chickens have worms? Also could you expand more about the fermenting you do with the feed? Sounds like birds could get drunk--lol. But seriously I make wine and as it clears there is spent yeast at bottom. Could this benefit the chickens to give them this...
This is an awesome experiment. I notice the comment that eggs covered by wool and/or sweatshirt. Is there concern for enough air? In comparison to a hen--sitting on them and reducing air flow--guess it would be similar with the shirts.
Keep us informed. This is an amazing experiment and...
OK--those are the coolest feeders I have seen! I love it when someone comes up with something new--something to dress up the coop a bit--especially with winter keeping them in the coop more.
Does the image have to be graphics or can it be a pic--like a .jpg?
We adopted a hen who has turned out to be a roo!! No saddle feathers, but she was a 'big girl', or so I thought.
A lovely bird who needs a new home. My town does not allow roos. Does anyone have room for a nice bird? He is about 7 months old--an Easter chick.
I love all the times and reasons for the names. It further proves only chicken people can understand that chickens are 'people' too!
I have:
Trip--last of Barred Rocks triplets
Blackey--Black sex link
Oozy--A Delaware--named by a friend called the same because of his 'big gun' arms---irony...
This is a great article. We introduced new additions to the flock and every example provided--they demonstrated! I knew it was a pecking order ritual. We also kept newbies in coop with a screen separator so all could visit and get to know each other for about two weeks. Transition together was...
Oh no....I think this is what I picked up up at Tractor Supply this spring--3 Anconas (red) and 3 red sex link. The are 8 weeks old, but very skittish. I try to pick them up often thinking I get them 'calm' by 'mothering' them a bit. I am not sure this will work. I have 9 other birds and they...
We had a very nice coop we quickly outgrew as a result of chicken math. First coop was two 4x8 sheets of plywood rectangular. Peak roof with roosts high, some a bit over nesting boxes but then we covered boxes. Original design was 2.5 ft off the ground--on stilts, so to speak. Then we added...

I am having a problem also. I have 11 standards, in a coop that had a renovation in the summer for a total of 48 sq feet. I have 4 3year olds and 7 that were a day old May 3. Of the newbys, 3 are Buckeyes. One of the Buckeyes is pulling/plucking feathers of the other two Buckeyes...
I have one Delaware. Received her as a day old May 2009 along with 10 other babies. I had 4 other grown birds. Irronically, the Delaware appears to be the dominant bird now. Every time I enter the coop, even soon after they have turned in, she always hops down to come and see what I am...
I started my lentils on Sunday and today (Thurs) the sprouts are starting to develop green leaves. I had some sprout starts Mon. a.m.! These are headed to the chickens in the a.m. Fed the other jar to the chicken on Wed. They loved them!! I cannot wait to try other seeds.
I used some of the...

It's the "What & how to feed poultry" Google book. Page 59. Use this search for charcoal.
I've heard such great things about biochar but I'm really sensitive to wood smoke as it triggers asthma attacks. My neighbor has a wood stove. When we have an inversion where the smoke is kept...

OK--to Whole Foods I will go!! I am also curious about the mung beans. I started my lentils yesterday and this evening I have many sprout starts. I am wayyyy excited. This is fun!!
Only some will appreciate such excitement, lol.
Wow!!! Have just read all of the posts about sprouting--and I am hooked! I ran to my pantry to see what I had available to spout. Now trying to find all of my canning jar!s! I always end up, at the end of the last winter season, will small parts of bags from beans, peas (which I learned are...
