    Leg band on cock

For my roosters and Black Jersey Giant hens, I put my bands above the spur and use blue plastic numbered bands that have some give if you don't seal them. I never seal my bands. I use green on standard or smaller sized hens. They last fairly well. They can sometimes knock them off. If not...

Chicken run in existing garden- good idea?

I used to let my chickens free-range our unfenced garden after it was well established. Squash and Okra were knee-high or taller. My chickens were more interested in the bugs that it attracted than the actual plants. That is not to say I didn't occasionally have a peck mark or two on my...

Do you prefer apps or paper and pen?

I laminate a list and use a dry erase marker to check everyone and make notes. This is great to prep for chores like nail clipping, first aide, egg records AND chicken sitters. When my parents tend my flock they can tell me who needs help or who is missing even when they don't know names or...

    Sour crop???

1 teaspoon (ACV) Apple Cider Vinegar per gallon of water helps prevent it, and treat it... I think. I've read many give it once a week. It also helps keep the water cleaner, provides a probiotic and vitamin C for your birds.

    Moving the Flock...

Their youngest grandson is also my nephew. They have him more than his mom does, because she is working and going back to school. As it stands, my nephew (age 2.5 years) is allowed to come over ANY time he wants when I am outside tending the garden and watching my 2 boys play. His 2 older 1/2...

    Moving the Flock...

Last night, I talked to my next door neighbor. She used to have chickens and said she wants to keep some again. So I guess she will have to take care of her dogs first. Not holding my breath that any of this will happen soon.

Our dog was 6 years old the day I joined BYC. He is now 15 years old. Beakman and Jasper turned 9 years old on April 15th of this year. Sadly this was Beakman's last birtday. He passed away earlier this month. Now Jasper is the last one from my first flock. :(
