Ok, so Silver Duckwing Leghorns it is....I guess I was right in the first place! Whatever those two are, they are the sweetest of my five. They will let me pet and handle them with out FREAKING OUT like my Spanish ladies. Thanks you guys!

Dorking? Silver Leghorn? or ??? (Pic Heavy)

Ok, so most likely a pair of Leghorns. How common is it to find hens with spurs? Is it a Leghorn thing?

Dorking? Silver Leghorn? or ??? (Pic Heavy)

Thanks, akcountrygrrl. I have heard that hatchery chickens are often not carefully bred to the standard.

Dorking? Silver Leghorn? or ??? (Pic Heavy)

I have a pair of hens, just over a year old, whose breed is a mystery to me. I got them from a friend as pullets--she had a double order of Murray McMurray's Rare Breed Layers, and gave some of her extras to me. Ever since, I have been trying to pin down what they are, For a long time, I had...

    My 1-year-old hen is crowing!

Maybe she was just proclaiming her pride in her egg-laying skills....They each have their own way of making an "announcement" after laying. I've just never seen any of them crow. Fortunately, it's not as loud as a rooster crow. It's got the same pattern, and she was using the same "bowed up"...

    My 1-year-old hen is crowing!

I have a flock of 5 hens in my suburban back yard. Roosters are NOT allowed in our city limits..... This morning I looked out the window and saw my "alpha" hen up on a roost bar in the run, CROWING. Or making her best effort. LOL! Yes, I am SURE she is a "she"--I know she's laid eggs, and...

muti-species sweet mix from TSC for hens

Quote: X3 I just found a small local feed store that carries a good quality feed that is milled here in my state, and it is $10 for a 50# bag. I couldn't believe the difference, since I'm used to getting Layena at TSC.

    Mini Pellets

Sounds like a mini pellet might be worth your while, if you could get it in Oklahoma. I just bought my first bag of Tucker Mills.....I haven't even ripped it open, so I haven't actually seen the smaller pellets yet. I wanted to try their super layer (more protien) to help my Spanish through...

What is the price of peanuts in China? What are you paying for feed?

Yesterday I found Tucker Mills Super Layer Mini Pellet (21%, I think) for $11 at a locally owned feed store (16% was $10), then went to Sikes and found Layena Omega Plus pellets for $18. I'm in east Alabama. ETA: both were 50# bags

    Mini Pellets

I know of at least 1 feed producer (Tucker Mills) that makes a "mini-pellet." Maybe that's what you saw at the show? I don't know a whole lot about it, but I have read that sometimes chickens prefer to eat smaller pieces? Maybe someone with more experience than me can confirm?

    Chicken Feed + Kitchen Scraps = ?

Thanks you guys...all of those are helpful answers! I am so thankful for this forum. Before I got my girls, I read everything I could find about keeping chickens, and I thought I knew a lot. Now I'm having to continue my education by observing my chickens and asking questions of people with...

    Chicken Feed + Kitchen Scraps = ?

This is for all of you long-time chicken owners with loads of experience. If you give your chickens kitchen scraps in addition to their feed, do your chickens eat less feed and therefore you save money on your feed bill? Or do they just eat the scraps in addition to feed and get fat? Does...

Keep moving tractor in winter or park it?

I live in Alabama, and the grass is still green here, but when it dies for the season, is it still good to move a tractor-style coop around the yard or is it better to park it in one place?
