some people sell them as "wild mallards" "flying mallards" "mallards". If they are toe clipped they are not wild but captive reared even though they might be genetically wild.
My mallards appear to be able to fly strong enough to migrate if they wanted to but they are happy on the...
I feed mine just as much as they can eat every evening about an hour before dark. The forage during the day and I give them a nice dinner before dark. They are always waiting for me when I drive up.
mine are 10 weeks old and the drakes and hens are molting their immature plumage for their adult plumage. Mine are on Purina Gamebird Flight Conditioner which is a 19% protein ration. No need to change feed if you are feeding them a high quality feed.

where'd you get your mallards from?
Mine arent from anybodys line. I started raising mallards years ago and have worked my line to be as pure to wild as possible. If you can find domestics any closer their not domestics
So you've had some wild mallards breed with yours?

yep.. They started being able to fly a little at 7 weeks.
I feed the Purina Game Bird Chow line.
Got my ducks from Whistling Wings Inc. in illinois. They are supposed to be pretty close to genetically "wild".
This line of food is probably a higher quality ration than normal poultry...
my 22 mallards are 9 weeks old. I have 15 drakes and 7 hens. Should have plenty of fertile eggs next spring.
the other day a dog made a run at them and they flew into the pond. He pursued them by swimming into the water and they took off and circled the pond about 5 times before landing...
Why do you want to clip their wings. Mine have been flying for 2 weeks, I've personally seen them escape from dogs by flying away when they see one trying to catch one. I want mine to be conditioned to survive.
mallards need to stretch their wings to stay in "flight shape". Mine are 8 weeks old today, we released them on my 4.5 acre pond last thursday. They are able to fly across the pond a few feet off the water but have not built up the strength to gain much altitude, and their wing feathers aren't...
my mallards are flying a little right now in short bursts and they are almost 8 weeks old. I can tell drakes from hens by vocalizations and bill color.
I would recommend giving them Purina Game Bird Chow startena for the first 6 weeks. That will replicate their diet in the wild and ensure they grow strong wings and good feathers. After 6 weeks switch to Purina Game Bird Chow Flight Conditioner until they fly off or get fully grown.
It's...
mallards are naturally skiddish. As I understand it, mine are from close to genetically wild ducks, so they are skiddish but they recognize me as their source of tasty purina gamebird chow.
Hens don't care to be around drakes when they are broody unless they have a pretty strong pair bond. I had a pair of mallards when I was younger along with several other species. The drake would stay by the hen when she was on her nest, and she didn't seem to mind. She did not want to be around...
