thank you all for the responses. The links are great. I'll addmit, Im very scared to do the bumblefoot surgery. Does it cause them tons of pain? I know this must be done in order to perserve her life, but man, it looks like it hurts big time. If I found a vet to do it, how much do you think...
1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.) 1 1/2 years old, BO, about 5Lbs

I've got the top of my run covered, granted it's only a measly 10x10'. I would agree with everyone else and say you should cover it with something like hardware cloth or chicken wire.
This exact thing happened to me just a few weeks ago. Five hens together since they were little chicks with no problems up until one of my Orpingtons went broody. It seemed she was forever banished from the flock- none of the other hens wanted anything to do with her and would chase her away...
