I picked up some eggs from a breeder today and he threw in a few olive egger eggs for free. He has never hatched any of those eggs and I forgot to ask if they hatched what color the eggs would be. So, since I know nothing about genetics and such I was wondering if someone could fill me in on...
I am looking for hatching eggs. I would like to pick up locally in KY, but I will have them shipped if I must. No barnyard mix or ducks. Anything else is okay with me. Please please let me know what you have.
Alright, here is an update for anyone interested: Original momma will help and hang out with her babies as long as they follow her while she is doing whatever she wants to do (I have unkindly named her crack momma). Super broody hatched out 10 of her 16 eggs, but lost 2 along the way. She has...
Well, yesterday the original momma decided that mothering wasn't her schtick. She left the babies with broody and never came back to them, even roosted last night. Broody is raising 5 poults at 2 weeks old AND still on her nest. I checked a few eggs last night, but didn't get all of them since...
That is a concern of mine too, but I don't have another area to move her to. I wasn't expecting 4 of 5 turkeys to go broody at the exact same time. See what I get for thinking I had it all figured out? Right now she is still sitting, and at last check the eggs looked ready to go at any point...
I had a hen hatch out 5 poults around May 10. At first she kept them in a safe little cubby hidden away from everyone else. A few days ago I caught her the nest that occupies the brooding stall where she is with another hen on her eggs. Babies are snuggled up under both of them and in the...
I love curious little turkeys!
In somewhat related news: a chicken egg and a turkey egg have gone missing from under broody #1. I don't know when or how it happened. I'm hoping for the best case scenario of they got broken and eaten NOT kicked out, stolen, then gathered and sold. I do...
Been a while since I've checked in...
I set 18 turkey eggs and 3 chicken eggs. 16 turkey and 3 chicken made it to lockdown. My hatch went amazingly well! 14 turkeys hatched, one dead in shell and one pipped then died, and all 3 chickens hatched.
Now I'm waiting on my first broody, on 13...
There is a shot of the legs. Like I said, they are yellow, but the toes have a bit of silver shadow. I truly am hoping for a truly large breed rooster to add new blood to the flock. Anything of the smaller breeds of the large fowl is going straight to the table... Again any ideas are welcome.
The only reason I would not eat this "rare" chick would be if he sized out larger than my two current roosters. I breed my own table birds and having another large male in my gene pool would help me be more selective on size. We don't keep a lot of chickens for pets here, most of them are a...
