I did it once. Never again. I was keeping a heat lamp on 24/7 above their water. After a while they started eating the feathers off of each other while on the roost. I read somewhere that they need a certain amount of darkness every night or they will start getting nutty.
Not sure how to stop it but you have to do something or its going to get ugly. Mine started doing that, they eat the feathers off each others back. Soon they will be eating flesh. I still have one of mine isolated after 4 weeks because she was torn up so bad. The others healed up with...
My favorite:
6 eggs
2 TBS mayo
1 t. mustard
1 t. sugar
1 t. dill pickle juice (the vinegar solution in the pickle jar)
salt and pepper to taste
sprinkle with paprika
These are just like my grandmother used to make. They are great. Try it, you wont be sorry.
Hey, I'm in Mount Vernon too. Actually, a few miles S.W. of town. I have 4 RIR, 5 W. Rock, 5 Black stars, 4 SLW and 5 BR. They are about 19 weeks old. No eggs yet but hopefully soon.
I'm in Ohio too. Amen on the heat but I vote for putting it out in the open. Just properly ventilate the coop and I think it will be ok. The woods makes it easier for varmints to sneak around without you being able to see what is going on. Several years ago I had chickens in my barn in the edge...
Thanks for all the good comments
I think it looks great! Are you planning to have a fenced-in run around it? This is the style I want to have too... something like a shed, but made for the chicas
Yes, I'm going to build a fenced run. I found the plans online. I could post a link if you want...
I considered putting the 2x4's flat but it just doesn't seem right to me. I know it would work that way but to me it just seems more natural for them to be able to grip the board. I used screws instead of nails so it wont be too hard to change if I need to.
Wow. That is some serious quality. I'm impressed. I can relate to your frustrations. I am building one and it seems like everything has taken me four times as long as it should.
I am building a coop now. I put mine 18" off the floor. Here is a pic. The second pic shows the roost height in relation to the nest boxes. Don't take this as gospel since I haven't let my birds try it out yet. I hope they like it!
My Grandmother, God rest her soul, once took on a skunk inside her henhouse armed with nothing but a hoe handle. She killed the skunk and didn't even get sprayed.
Be careful. There is a possibility you could produce botulism in the rotting grain. There is a link to an article in the "maggot" thread. It tells how he produces maggots only with dead animals.
He mentions a disease caller "rubberneck" (or something like that) which is caused by chickens...
I got a Japanese beetle trap and I get about a third of a quart of beetles every day. The chickens love them. I learned to wait until morning to feed previous days catch. If you don't, half of them will fly away when you dump them out. The next morning they are very compliant.
Those look like pullets to me. I have some RIR's that are 6 weeks old and the roos have bigger combs than yours. I may be comparing apples to oranges though since yours are definitely not RIR. I still think they are pullets.
