What is causing this? Bright red skin. (pic)

Dusted today and plan to clean and spray the coop this weekend. Since it is a rooster and not an egg layer, is injectable ivomec a better solution possibly? Thanks!

What is causing this? Bright red skin. (pic)

I just took a closer look and saw several, very small, dark colored bugs crawling fast across his skin so I assume those are mites. What is the best way to get rid of them? So far none onf the hens have the red skin like he does, but since they all share a coop, I'm sure they will need to be...

What is causing this? Bright red skin. (pic)

Hmmm... I'll look closer for mites and lice then. The only reason I don't think it is his spurs is because I keep them trimmed and they are pretty dull and blunt. Is this how their skin gets when irritated? I have never seen skin so red before.

What is causing this? Bright red skin. (pic)

This is a pic of my French Black Copper Marans rooster. He has a a patch like this on either side of his vent. It doesn't appear to be sore or uncomfortable and I only noticed it when he was bent over eating. I can't imagine this is normal but I don't have another FBCM roo to compare. Any ideas?

My July silkie mixes laid their first eggs yesterday!!! <3 <3 <3

I have 4 silkies that are 7 months old and one started crowing about 2 weeks ago but no eggs or crowing from the other three. Is it common for silkies to start laying later than other breeds?

What few eggs we are getting have yucky brown spots

The white spots on the organs could very possibly be an indication of Marek's Disease.

    Cyst on cheek?

Thank you for your reply! I attempted to lance the area yesterday afternoon, but after making a small incision, I couldn't really tell much about the mass itself and it was starting to bleed more than I liked, so I stopped at that point. Today, I decided to call every vet in the phone book and I...

    Cyst on cheek?

I noticed a few days ago that this GL Cochin hen had some swelling on her cheek but otherwise seemed ok, so I decided to watch her for a few more days to see if it would go away on its own. It didn't, so today I decided to see if I could drain it. However, when I was cleaning it up I noticed...

What has made my hen lose her equilibrium?

Hmm, hadn't thought of that but anything is possible I guess. I'll worm her and see if that helps. Thanks

What has made my hen lose her equilibrium?

I have a 6 month old Silver Laced Cochin hen that I found a week ago in the run unable to walk without falling over and losing her balance. I isolated her immediately, and started tetracycline w/electrolytes in her water because a few months ago another hen of mine became ill with a bacterial...

Lost my beautiful GL Cochin roo to fowlpox today.

I noticed the first lesions on his comb about 3 weeks ago and they progressed rapidly after that until his comb and wattles were pretty much covered with the black scabs. I never saw any in his throat so I am pretty sure he only had the dry type. Well, as of yesterday, I thought we had it beat...

eat eggs after vaccinating for fowl pox?

I was wondering the same thing so I just called the manufacurer, Pfizer Animal Health, and the veterinarian on staff told me that there was NO withdrawal with the eggs and that they were perfectly safe to eat. The 21 day withdrawal refers ONLY to the slaughter of the chicken itself. I just wish...

Amazing! I had no idea you could line breed for that long like that without issue. Such a wealth of experience to be had here. Thank you for sharing that!

Best way to start developing a line from chicks, Trio or two pair?

They are expensive, for me anyway, but I have very rare and unique opportunity to get some really high quality birds so I am getting what I can for now. After I digest the above mentioned thread, I will have a better idea how I want to proceed and can add to the line then as needed.

Best way to start developing a line from chicks, Trio or two pair?

Thanks! I hadn't considered 3 hens and 1 roo but that actually might be a better option for me. Thank you for your prompt reply too!

Best way to start developing a line from chicks, Trio or two pair?

If you were going to start breeding a particular line and were starting with chicks of known sex, and you could only get a maximum of four, would you recommend a trio of two hens and one roo, or would you go with two pair? I need to make a decision by tomorrow and I haven't had time to fully...

What is your favorite incubator? (Looking for something with easy to manage humidity)
