The first entry in my car stat/maintenance book says 1.99 a gallon. Looking at the log books from my dad's 68 chevy, gas was something like 11 cents a gallon. In it you could see the spike of gas prices when it was rationed and when the locking gas cap was purchased! Wish we had the book still...
