I've got a quail with a prolapsed vent.
We've gotten a few double yolkers the past week that I think were from her.
Usually my husband deals with the quail since they're on the ground I have to like crawl in to get the eggs, but I did it tonight and noticed one was looking off.
When I picked her...
Those that sell quail eggs-- Where do you buy your cartons??? They are so expensive everywhere I look (like $1 a piece!) it wouldn't even be feasible without seriously jacking up the price
I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't triple.
I've gotten a couple whoppers that were doubles before, but nothing like this, it's almost the size of my normal chicken eggs.
I don't know which of my 5 girls laid it, but they all seem to be doing fine.
I'll be eating good for breakfast :)
Holy quail egg!
I don't know how this didn't kill her, I've never seen anything like it.
Here's a pic with a white leghorn and a barred rock egg. The other is with a normal quail egg. It's somehow bigger than my bantam's is!
We went away for 6 days & I had the kid next door collect eggs everyday.
He must have missed that one because when we got home there was 1 turkey egg in there so we thought she had laid it that day.
Apparently she had been sitting on it for almost a week
Didn't even think to candle it.
Kicking...
I have no problem eating a fertile egg (obviously as long as it didn't start developing, got one of them by accident once & was pretty disgusted), but my quail & chicken eggs aren't since I don't have any roo's.
I know with a lot of eggs fertile eggs are sold for a lot more (at least around...
Does anyone sell their quail eggs to people to eat?
We don't really have extra, but I had someone ask about them.
I was wondering what the going rate on them would be?
I assume it wouldn't be much as you can buy fertile hatching eggs quite cheap.
They are very small (though I only get like 3...
I couldn't find any gamebird feed, had to use flock raiser.
We processed ours pretty early--5 weeks I think.
We ended up having a freakishly cold winter here & an abundance of quail hatch. I had to have them in a bunch of cages all with heat lamps I ended up with a $400 power bill so they had...
I think quail is my favorite poultry meat.
Love it.
My kids love it too.
Wish you got more meat off of them though. I allow 1 per person, but honestly I think my family could each eat like 3 if I let them, it's their favorite!
Curious--
How many of you skin your quail & how many pluck?
Due to the sheer volume we skinned them all (first time eating or raising quail).
I was reading an article online about plucking ducks & the guy said that he will only pluck his quail because they taste completely different with skin...
Still no eggs for me, getting worried!
I don't use artificial lighting, but especially after day light savings, we are getting an abundance (live in NC).
Everything's laying except my quails.
They hatched Christmas, so they're plenty old enough! The rest were all processed about 8 weeks ago...
I heard you only get a year of laying out of quail. At the end of the year they should all be processed and replaced.
But this is what I was told, I've only had quail for 9 weeks...
I feel like I should be having eggs by now....
I check their pen everyday and nothing.
We processed them all at about 5 1/2 weeks since they were getting overcrowded & kept 5 girls for layers.
Now they're 9 weeks old and still no eggs.
I know it's just now starting to be Spring, but I had heard...
How long do I have to rest the quail meat between killing and eating?
Processing them trying to figure out if we can eat for dinner.
I'm assuming rigormortis will set in like in chickens?
I don't blame you. I'm a city girl, formal vegan, never even killed a bug haha. My husband is responsible for all the killing/skinning/gutting, then he brings the bird to the back door & I wash it off, break it down, & vacuum seal it all. Works quicker that way, I won't be involved in the...
Scissors just got here, all ready to process!
It was supposed to be almost 70 & sunny tomorrow morning, now they are saying raining & a high of 49
Can't wait to try this quail meat!
