Well, candled this morning and down to 31 now... The roo must have been ignoring some of the girls. We have also had some pretty cold temps that might have affected the eggs...

First major hatch of the spring, and all went well! Had 24 fertile Niener eggs, and got 19 fluffy chicks! Set another 40 Niederrheiner eggs on 3/19 and have a while yet before I can candle and see how many are fertile. I think that will be it for me to hatch for the spring. Gonna wait until fall...

My girls are laying fools and my rooster is one of the best I have ever had! And I currently have 10 different breeds, with at least 10 other breeds that I have tried and gotten rid of...

Oh I agree and I love my GFF birds! I have just learned (at some expense) to read between the lines of their descriptions... LOL

GFF usually overstates the qualities of the birds they are selling. Read about their Lyonnaise. Nowhere do they tell you that these beautiful birds only get to about 2 to 3 pounds at most... :-/

First of all, Greenfire does not sell hatching eggs. Second, I personally thing it looks like a lemon cuckoo orpington more than a Niederrheiner...

This kid is a hoot! :) He is one of the younger Nieds and still in the house, but planning on moving them out to the barn in a few days.

These kids will be 3 weeks old on Sunday, and I actually have a total of 18 chicks - will need to see how many of each that I have.

I bought 2 sets from Greenfire - first set I have just 5, hatched 5/15, and second set I have 13 hatched 5/22

So I am hoping this is correct - the darker ones are the girls?

Happy to have found this thread, as I just put in an order for 10 each of the Niederrheiners and Bielefelders. I had 2 Biel roos a few years ago, but at the time, I was unable to find any Biel hens or pullets, so rehomed my boys. I also have Icelandics and Salmon Faverolles, plus a few Easter...
