OK so I found some images that show a disqualification. You can see the hen is displaying black tickings on the saddle when it should be buff or white cuckoo pattern only.
I think this is a great start but we're not mentioning other key things like weight (8-10 lbs hens, 10-12 lbs roosters) egg weight (Extra Large to Jumbo) egg color (cream). No feathers on shanks or feet. 3 front digits, 1 hind digit on feet. Body type - heavy breed (round / full body, broad...
@wleigh1021,
Yes Niederrheiners are great layers as well. Mine are currently outperforming my Bielefelders so I'm making some team decisions on some of those girls. As far as autosexing, the Niederrheiners are an autosexing breed too. Roosters have always been non-aggressive towards humans...
Sounds like a plan. Yes there are bantam Niederrheiners as well as Bielefelders in different colors. I didn't know there were any hatcheries that carried Niederrheiners. Which ones are you referring to?
Fascinating. I did not know Greenfire falsely advertises. I'd like to share that considering that was the presumed status, that my birds are larger than some of the other named farms due to the fact that I thought I was adhering to a breed standard (10-12lbs roos and 8-10lbs hens). With that...
@mandelyn
Yes the Mechelen are Malines. Same ones used for the Bielefelder. Are you sure 7 to 9 lbs because Greenfire is claiming 10 to 12lbs and hens 8 to 10 lbs. The Niederrheiner is available in Bantam size as well, just not in the US. And as far as colors, there is also a Crele version...
Hi @TRoz ,
We are currently working on that project (taking pics), weight included. We're not commercially selling meat to market at the moment so we grow a few batches for our own human consumption throughout the year. (And wow aren't they delicious!) As far as broodiness, broodiness was...
@cutipatooti ,
Just like with everything, size / weight varies. Our eggs are ranging from Extra Large to Jumbo. No gals over 2 years old. We've rendered our cockerels at 3 mo old and they were 5lbs. on average. If that's the case, they would have been around 10 lbs on average, full grown...
I wouldn't say it's a concern. You are suppose to easily determine by color, otherwise it doesn't adhere to the autosexing function of the breed. If that's the case, then I would cull them since their genes deviate. (I wouldn't suggest doing that now - it could be because you are still...
Hi @UGLYFOOT
Sorry to hear about your unfortunate outcome. We have the 'Ranch location in New England and we're working on having another location in Orange County, CA. If you're having bad luck with day olds and hatching eggs, I suggest going for slightly older chicks i.e. 1 week.
In...
