The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

I would add water if the humidity went below 35% or so, but I wasn't very consistent about it. The manual for my incubator suggests keeping humidity around 50-60% until day 18 then boosting it by adding water.

None of mine hatched. I suspect dry hatch method is not appropriate for the incubator I use. One egg lasted until day 16 and then died. I will try again later.

I've culled my eggs that were not developing and I'm down to 17 eggs, some of which will hatch after April 1st. There is only one white egg left, but it's very lively. I have 5 dark brown eggs, a beige one, a green one (all local, from the Chicken Girls in Forestville via Andy's market) and a...

The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

The Chicken Girls eggs had straw sticking to them and had obviously not been washed, and Forestville is a brief jaunt from hereon decent roads. So between that, and the freshness of the eggs, I'm hoping a rooster or two has had something to do with these eggs' mothers, and they may yet hatch.

The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

Well, my dozen white eggs stopped developing. I'm leaving them alone now except for turning them, since I don't want to throw out an egg that might be viable. I walked over the hill to Andy's market on Highway 116 in Sebastopol, and bought a carton of Rock Island fertile brown eggs to replace...

The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

When I candled my 12 remaining eggs today, seems like only four are developing. I saw spiders and veins. But they are a day or two behind in development, when compared to embryos in the charts. So I cranked up the heat to a level appropriate for a still air incubator, and I've got my fingers...

The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

I'm down to 12 Easter Hatchalong eggs after disposing of my Safeway Rock Island brown eggs that got baked by a heat surge. My twelve remaining candled eggs have some spiders at day six, though! They are Nutrifresh Trader Joe eggs, probably with White Leghorns inside. Never put the LG...

Don't Ameracauna chicks have chipmunk stripes and pea combs like that?

Fertility lessens after hens and roosters are three years old. If yours are 4 and 5 years old, you should probably bring in younger unrelated birds as outcrosses.

The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

Well, I'm in the 2016 Easter Hatch-a-long now! Saw some $2.99 a carton fertile white eggs at Trader Joe's. Could not resist. They are sitting in my 'bator with the Rock Island Safeway $4.49 brown eggs, air cells traced in pencil, x's and numbers on their sides, leaning at an angle in the...
