The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

It could be a breed trait, we hatched a strain of barred rock which took ages to feather in...the cockerels were still like your little one till 8-10 weeks or more. If you have multiple chicks of the same breed and sex and one is different then it could be a problem with nutrient absorption or...

The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

I'm sorry you had to go through that, it is difficult when you try so hard and something still goes wrong. :hugs I would expect that the hen was totally caught by surprise and instinctively reacted to protect her nest. When they feel hatching going on they are in a very hyper protective mind...

The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

The buff is just protecting it's nest from any intruders during a critical time, rather than removing the buff to protect chicks you should consider providing a barrier to keep her from being bothered. ...yes some broody hens will cooperate and co brood but many won't and it has been said here...

The 7th Annual BYC Easter Hatch-A-Long!

Ok Sally, I'm gonna tag along, though I don't think I will be able to participate in the 'big hatch' since my broodies rarely follow silly human schedules. We do have 2 broodies setting on Easter Egger eggs though, due on the 20th. If I get a surprise broody this weekend though we'll join...
