Duck Breed Focus - Australian Spotted Duck

This is the mama hen and yellow down ducklings I expected to be silverheads, although her being greenhead did puzzle me because I thought greenheads could not have silverheads, only blueheads and silverheads can have silverheads. I think the hen has bluehead genotype with greenhead phenotype...

Duck Breed Focus - Australian Spotted Duck

My daughter is working towards earning her Girl Scout Gold Award now but she is still active with her Silver Award project so we continue to do education and outreach with her ducks. I love it when people are interested in showing them because that is another way more people will learn about...

Duck Breed Focus - Australian Spotted Duck

I was thinking mini Appleyard but I did not want to guess. I would not count on the one with the gray head being a purebred Spot if that is what you were told. If you got it as a duckling it was probably just a mix-up. It is pretty unusual looking so it does not resemble a standard colored...

Duck Breed Focus - Australian Spotted Duck

The quacking hen may be a bluehead or a greenhead that carries bluehead genetics. Her spots almost look blue (gray) on her back but they look darker on the side. I am not sure what the other two ducks are since their coloring is not what I would expect from Spots. Are you thinking the two...

Duck Breed Focus - Australian Spotted Duck

Two greenhead hens (dark brown spots) and a bluehead drake (black head color).

Duck Breed Focus - Australian Spotted Duck

We had 3 more ducklings in the pond with their mama yesterday. It is unusual to have such small clutches of ducklings hatching but the hens lose eggs to the crows when they get off to eat and drink so their clutches get smaller and smaller until the remaining eggs hatch. We really need to...

Duck Breed Focus - Australian Spotted Duck

I wanted to post a picture of ducklings with multiple drakes because people often report that they have drake aggression issues but that does not happen with this breed. Our drakes protect the ducklings as much as possible with crows being our worst predator.

Duck Breed Focus - Australian Spotted Duck

We have been taking hatchlings from hens this year instead of incubating, although my daughter may have some eggs incubating as well. They always go so fast but I have been able to take two boys from one nest and group them with two girls from another nest to make unrelated breeding groups and...

Duck Breed Focus - Australian Spotted Duck

We have more ducklings hatched today and still hatching so I might be able to sell them as pairs now. We tried to get the mother hen to take back her two youngest ducklings but she wasn't fooled so the four are inside together and just two are left outside with the hen.

Duck Breed Focus - Australian Spotted Duck

I have been listening to the two ducklings in the house and they sound like a hen and drake. They are still too small to vent sex to be certain but I want to be sure not to sell a brother and sister together to avoid them being inbred, either accidently or on purpose. We usually sell...

Duck Breed Focus - Australian Spotted Duck

We moved the last two eggs from the nest into the incubator and both hatched today, just two days behind their siblings. I am going to see if the hen will take them tomorrow with the four we let her keep. Anthing hatching from the incubator now will not be out of this mother so we can make...

Duck Breed Focus - Australian Spotted Duck

We really love our Spots. I have raised many duck breeds over the years, always wanting to try something new I guess, but we are sold on the Spots and I will never go back to another breed unless I need meat ducks. I like eating chicken and turkey more than I like eating duck because I like...

Duck Breed Focus - Australian Spotted Duck

Yes, she is a good mama duck. She is a greenhead but she is split to bluehead and I suspect the drake was bluehead to have so much color variety in one clutch. There is one darker one that shows up more greenhead looking in pictures and the other one I am calling greenhead looks more like a...

Duck Breed Focus - Australian Spotted Duck

My daughter has eggs in the incubator but her first hatch was due yesterday and they are late. She lowered the incubator temperature on a hot day because it was at 102 but all she needed to do was open the lid to let them cool a bit without moving the dial. Once the Little Giant incubators are...

Duck Breed Focus - Australian Spotted Duck

I have been asked to ship eggs all over the country but I have not tried it yet. I am too afraid the post office will handle them in a way that prevents them from hatching and ethically it creates a dilema I don't want to get into. Once I become NPIP it might be something I attempt but I read...

Duck Breed Focus - Australian Spotted Duck

So this week I had two friends who were expecting hatches of Australian Spotted ducks end up disappointed over hatching failures. We have set our first hatches in the incubator since I was expecting my surgery to be over with on Tuesday but instead it was further delayed. My daughter has taken...

Duck Breed Focus - Australian Spotted Duck

So many Mallard derived breeds have the Mallard like down pattern that it is hard to tell the breed from the down alone. Then crossbreeds are a further challenge but buying from a breeder eliminates that guessing game. I have made sure all our Australian Spotted ducks are from Holderreads...

Duck Breed Focus - Australian Spotted Duck

They do look like they could be greenhead Spots if Dave is still hatching them. I would just verify with him to be sure. Ducklings can be hard to identify from unknown sources but you have a reputable source so you can know for sure. If you did get the Spots unexpectedly then congratulations!

Duck Breed Focus - Australian Spotted Duck

Maybe Dave did not send all his Australian Spotted ducks to Montana but I thought he had sold out of Spots and was no longer hatching them. You may need to ask him if he is hatching any Spots this season.
