Do You Heat Your Coop? (Poll) LATEST UPDATE PG 15

Luv's right... and I'm feeling the need to clarify my stance on this... It all depends upon the number of birds you have, the breeds you have, the age they are and the living conditions you have supplied for your birds. I have many birds, and yes, it gets extremely cold here and they're fine...

Do You Heat Your Coop? (Poll) LATEST UPDATE PG 15

-10F as our lows for the last few days... today we finally got snow and it warmed up to 14F... Still no heat in the layer coop, and the 15 chukars are doing just fine, too. I did break down and add a heatlamp to my Ameraucana babies in the breeder coop, as they were showing signs of...

Please let's not argue. If I was in Luv's shoes, I'd be heating, too.

Quote: I wonder why there seems to be such variance with this as well? My birds spend the entire day in their coop once it has gone below 25 F. I coax them out with treats and they will come out just long enough to eat them and then it's back in. Big babies. I have seen you say that your birds...

Do You Heat Your Coop? (Poll) LATEST UPDATE PG 15

Interior Alaska, where Luv lives, is brutal in the winter. I love Alaska and the cold, but there is NO WAY I would live up there. Near the Arctic Circle, and regular temps in the winter well below 0F. True, she may not have to give heat to her birds (especially if she has a lot), but I think...

Do You Heat Your Coop? (Poll) LATEST UPDATE PG 15

We lose power often enough here to worry about it. It usually happens on day 19 of a hatch, or on the #(*$@& coldest windiest night of the year. Last year I was running around trying to set up a generator that I had no idea how to operate in 50mph winds at -20°F... not fun. I'd just as soon...

Do You Heat Your Coop? (Poll) LATEST UPDATE PG 15

There are thermostats that look like plug multipliers... Thermocubes, I think they're called. You plug it in, and then there are two more sockets for lamps, heaters, what have you... it kicks on at 35°F and turns off at 45°F. Work great!

Do You Heat Your Coop? (Poll) LATEST UPDATE PG 15

Oops... I must have misread that! LOL! But still, even if there's a chance you'll see -80F ....brrrr... that just makes me shiver thinking about it! Yeah, the Interior gets those major temp swings because your landlocked, eh? I used to feel that when I was in CO. WA was just wet and...

Do You Heat Your Coop? (Poll) LATEST UPDATE PG 15

Quote: Hi Caran, at the risk of starting of a whole 'nother discussion on what's really cold, I wanted to give you my view on the adding heat. The main risk I see in adding heat is that you are acclimating your birds to a "false" temperature range. They will get less in the way of winter...

Gritsar, I am honored to be mentioned in the same breath as Miss P and Speckledhen... Though I'm not really old time when it comes to chickens... I've just had to learn really fast in the past few years! LOL!

Do You Heat Your Coop? (Poll) LATEST UPDATE PG 15

Quote: I can always tell who the tourists are in the summer here (Alaska) because they're wearing coats. Come to think of it, if they're wearing coats in the winter, they're either tourists or Cheechakos that haven't thickened up their blood yet. 30°F for me is T-shirt weather... I don't...

Do You Heat Your Coop? (Poll) LATEST UPDATE PG 15

Quote: I, for one, believe it... there are times when y'all Outsiders are colder than we are. But we have our moments. True, we can stay well below 0°F for all of Jan/Feb, so if our chickens can do it, yours can too... but like you said, they need to ACCLIMATE. Our birds have so much...

Do You Heat Your Coop? (Poll) LATEST UPDATE PG 15

Quote: Well bluey from what I've noticed the northerners (I wanted to use another word, but didn't want to start the Civil War all over again) think it just doesn't get cold here in the south. The truth is that it gets plenty cold, just not for months on end like it does in the north. Anyone...

Do You Heat Your Coop? (Poll) LATEST UPDATE PG 15

No, not even when it's -10°F outside. Only the waterer has a heated base. 8x8' coop, 8' at highest point. Probably 30 birds out there, all snuggled together, though there are a few that absolutely INSIST on sleeping outside, even at temps below 0°F. Deep litter, insulated with R19, with...
