Alien babies are doing well and growing.
Put up an ad to sell my extra quail babies and had to immediately take it down there was such a huge response! WOW is there a market for quail in my area!! Going to upscale my quail project, seriously this project seems like it will be very profitable...
Look at this beautiful thing I just spoiled myself with for a late breakfast! 12 quail eggs fried inside a slice of rosemary sourdough bread, sprinkled with white cheddar and fresh cracked pepper.
First time eating quail eggs like this and let me tell you, did not disappoint. A little yolk in...
Just pulled eggs I knew were past the hatch date (didn't label all eggs stupidly) and opened. Two ROTTED but clear, one upside down quitter, one shrink wrapped quitter, and the rest were clear. I love keeping reptiles, only the foul smelling eggs were thrown out, everything else got "recycled"...
My adult birds have grit at all times just to be safe. :) thanks for making sure! And reminding me that I should give a small handful to the older chicks too
I got the birds a bag of cracked corn when at the feed shop last week (dead end on quail feed unfortunately, highest protein they had was 24%, and that was only in 5 lb bags). They can't decide if it's food or dust bath material. Haha silly things
"Nothing to see here, human, move along."...
Happy new year, guys! :) I am even more overrun witrh birds now and still have more hatching! I had 8 button quail and 4 coturnix hatch last night alone!
The quail aren't the only new baby birds in the house. Check out these two ugly things(Baby white ringneck doves):
Babies babies, everyone has such lovely babies!! :D
I had a handful hatch overnight and still have plenty more coming! On the way to the nearest Tractor Supply right now for more quail feed. These birds eat so much!!
sorry I haven't posted on here in a WHILE. I am absolutely overrun with birds! I have *three* brooders set up now! Feels like all I do is clean up poop!
Incubator on lockdown again, heeeeeeeeee I'm so excited. :D How have you guys been?
Whoo hoo! I may be trading with a local quail keeper my already hatched peepers and fuzzers for some baby Bobwhite quail! I'll have three species of quail then!
Any tips if anyone here has experience with bobwhites?
Only like an hour until I set the quail eggs for the hatch a long! Hehehe, and I still have to set button eggs tomorrow for the HAL but after that my incubator is getting a break to be thuroughly disinfected! Don't know if I'll do another staggered hatch. I'll at least plan it better next time...
Sorry guys, I've been busy so not posting much (or at all, more accurately). Both the weird back sleeping chick and the tiny one with a broken ankle are 100% fine thanks to you guys' advice. I have a lid on the brooder box now or they climb on the hot pad cave and hop out of the box to come find...
They're *super* adorable and do everything at top speed: incubating, growing, laying, moving. The protein is 28%, it's the highest I could find. Honestly I don't like the feed at all, it has a lot of problems, and I'm planning a trip to the nearest feed shop in a couple weeks to see if I can...
I just looked for it and can't find it online. I'll check the bag when I can, but it's less than 1% and considering I also fed mealworms today which have a ridiculously high phosphorus to calcium ratio, I don't imagine a scoop of calcium powder will hurt the chicks.
Thanks so much for the advice, guys! Little guy seems to be doing great. Eating, drinking, running around adorably. I also added some calcium powder to the chick food. Figure it could only help. Also gave them a small scoop of tiny baby mealworms which they all ate with gusto.
Howdy folks! I made a thread in "emergencies" last night but nobody has replied so I'll ask here. One of my eensy weensy baby button quail has a broken ankle. Baby animals heal fast, but is there anything I can do to help the critter? I'm sure it's too tiny for a vet to do anything or for me to...
