    Dry incubation.

Here is a picture of three of our chicks! We are not sure what kind they are. They hatched out of white eggs, and the person we got them from mentioned White Star and Buff. They also keep marans... so we're not really sure, but we're glad to have some healthy little chicks anyway.

    Dry incubation.

Hi, We had four hatch on day 20, but none now on day 21 - there are five eggs left. Could it be the high humidity when the others hatched was bad for the others? It seems weird that some should be early and then nothing else (at least so far - nearly the end of day 21)

    Dry incubation.

Thanks for replying - glad you've explained all that, it really makes sense. I had wondered if our incubator wasn't really suitable for dry incubation. It's a small cheap one which we've borrowed. We're in the UK, and I wasn't sure whether all the people on here who talk about dry incubation...

    Dry incubation.

The one that had pipped and not made much progress has hatched now - once it got going again it was pretty fast. No others yet, but this is day 21. Keeping the lid on!

    Dry incubation.

Hi, We're towards the end of day 20 now. When I came down this morning, the first one had hatched and another had pipped - yay! Since then, two more have hatched, but the one that had pipped this morning hasn't made loads of progress. We have seen its beak, but most of what we can see through...

    Dry incubation.

By the way, thanks PD-Riverman - we smelt the eggs and they all smell okay, so we'll leave them all in.

    Dry incubation.

Please can someone tell me what the temperature should be for lockdown for dry incubation? Not sure if it's at all different than the temperature for wet incubation? And also what humidity does anybody aim for? Not sure if we'll be able to control it much, but I'd like to know what other...

    Dry incubation.

Hi, Thanks for your replies. I've just weighed and candled my eggs. The air sacs look mostly good (hard to see in some of the brown eggs, we have some brown and some white, and I'm new to all this so not very confident!) The weights seem rather low, don't know if any of you ever check the...

    Dry incubation.

Hi, I just wanted to check when lockdown should be? I started incubating my eggs late afternoon on Saturday 4th February. Lockdown should be day 18, shouldn't it? But the end of day 18 or the start - if it was the start, then I guess that would be late afternoon on Tuesday 20th February - or...

    That's fabulous, well done!

    Dry incubation.

What a beautiful chick. I will wait a few days - maybe day 10 or even day 14, and then try candling again when it's really dark. Till then I'll just hope everything's fine.

    Dry incubation.

I've just tried candling (day 7). The room probably wasn't dark enough, and I was just using a flashlight. I really couldn't see a lot! We have some white and some brown eggs. In the white ones, I could see something dark and flat-looking at one side of each egg. In the brown ones I...

    Dry incubation.

Thanks, that's really helpful, the salt test sounds like a great science experiment too. I think we won't bother with candling - we don't have a proper candler, and having tried looking through a different egg with our flashlight, are not confident we'd see a lot anyway. I think I'll leave the...

    Dry incubation.

I'm planning to candle the eggs this evening, because I set them on Saturday evening, so that should be five days. I've just been reading a different thread, and somebody was talking about checking where the air sac is before lockdown (I know that's not yet!) - is it best to check that the air...

    Dry incubation.

Hi, We're just incubating for the second time, the first time went badly, and now we're trying dry incubation. We'd read about 30-40% humidity for incubation and 60%+ for hatching. Our incubator is fan-operated, and we don't seem to be able to achieve 30-40% - if we put the smallest amount of...
