Hector's World: Adventures and Mayhem at Mountain View Poultry (or Sequel to The Evolution of Atlas

A bit of sunshine, and being outdoors for a short time, may help boost his spirits a little. Just keep an eye to make sure it's not too much on him. I don't have the words, but please know my heart goes out to you, and Hector. I've raised, trained, and loved on Hector vicariously, through...

You know I've always liked, and advocated for Hector. Even during his bratty stage. He always seemed like he'd turn out to be an exceptional rooster, and he has. Has it been so long now, that he's getting old? Where did the time go? It seems like only yesterday we were having discussions on...

I know you've gone the extra mile for her, to help her. Of that, there is no doubt. Sometimes, it's just their time. Still, it hurts to lose one, no matter the reason for the loss.

Sadly, we both know that happens sometimes. It's not about the quality of care. It's more than that.

speckled, I fully understand what you mean about some chickens not being "programmed" to live longer than others. Production hens are like that. I could get them to live a good bit longer than what others considered to be their normal lifespan, but still not nearly as long as my BA's. Sorry...

Maybe a bit of Nutri-Drench, for a few days? It could be the sluggish crop weakened her. I don't know of anything else to suggest.

It started back when all the "all natural", and "fermented feed" cults invaded. Finally got a lot of those people backed off, but far too many of the ones on now, are just plain rude, and inconsiderate.

Is there something going on out of the ordinary? I don't remember you complaining about it before, so does it have to do with his age? I guess you wouldn't know if he only does this when someone is around, like talking to them.

I've had roosters that would break up fights, and others that stood idly by. I prefer the ones that will break up fights. I found that the ones that break up fights, will also protect pullets, when newly introduced into a flock. They'll keep the bullying to a minimum.

I built my coop, and the sections, with extra heavy 2 x 4 welded wire. The roosts are far enough inside, that nothing can reach in, and grab them. When introducing chicks ready to begin coop life, they don't always take to the roost at first. They tend to lay together in the corner, on the...

Dd #2 came over early yesterday morning. We dispatched 2 roosters. Not a pleasant task, but I put it off as long as I could. I need the space for all these chicks, and the duckling. It helps (emotionally) having Dd #2 with me. Did I mention that Dd # 3 witnessed a mama duck, and all her...

Yes, the Stukel line would be the one to preserve. I understand too, when it becomes too difficult to preserve a line. I've got to get busy this year, and work on my BA's, or I too will lose the line. I hate to.
