When they start laying sounds pretty average. I always plan to see eggs at about 6 months. Some start before than and some after. I always have a mix of breeds because chickens and various breeds, for me are like potato chips....hard to have just one.

Since these are slow to develop when can I expect pullets to start laying? For some reason I'm having trouble posting pics on this as well as another forum. When I get it figured out I can post a pic of my 4 little dorkings.

Ordered 5 Silver Grey pullets and 1 roo today from McMurray! Yah! They are shipping as few as 15 after April 1st now so I didn't need to order 25. Limited availability so if anybody is going to do it, do it now. Live chicks work better for me than shipping eggs from far away. I'm looking...

Good to know. Thanks for the heads up. As for letting my chickens roam....it's either confine the coons and the herding dog or confine the chickens. In my case, it'll be the chickens, at least most of the time, but my idea of confinement is probably a little broader than that of the average...

Your post made me laugh since I can totally relate. We live on a farm/ranch so I have found eggs in some funny places......the 3rd level of the seed cleaner, inside the baler, underneath a sled, in a pipe, and all the normal places....in the wild rose jungle, under the bench, and low and...

We had dominiques from Sandhill Preservation. They were good foragers and hardy, but very stand-offish. I wouldn't have called them calm either. They were free range and I could never find their eggs, which wasn't good for me but was good in terms of protection from predators. If I am...

Right now I want good backyard birds that I don't have to baby along or feed tons. I don't know if I want to try breeding these or anything. Roosters that chase my kids can't stay long term. But frankly, I haven't had that much trouble with roos, and I have had a lot of different breeds of...

Thank you Syndey Acres. I was wondering about the no-scratch foraging as well and wondering if they were merely little lawn mowers. You gave a great description and summary. I don't mind an active bird, especially if they are friendly. I am still going to look into getting some. Even though...

Good reminder, thanks. I did favorite a site that has a page with Urch's contact information and a list of the birds he sells. What I'm going to do is wait a bit to see how my hatching goes before I order more eggs. If I get a really low hatch rate then I'll buy chicks. A question...

thank you all 3 :) I was thinking about ordering some other birds from Stromberg but have been hesitant because I want birds with the traditional characteristics. I have never ordered from Strombergs before so don't know about the quality. It's probably the cheaper way to go. I've ordered...

I can't read through 3000+ pages to find a breeder. Would you all tell me where I can acquire some silver or colored dorking hatching eggs?
