2/3 today - can't wait until Wednesday, when we pick up four chicks to slip under Rusty, our broody! I hope she accepts them as her own (especially as she's only sitting on one egg - hope she thinks quadruplets are possible for chickens!!!)
Well done to you both (and all your girls) - it's a great feeling when it happens!!
I had another 2/3 day, but Rusty's still broody, so she doesn't count. Yet again the other two must have booted her off her nest at some point - she was sitting on both their eggs plus her own when I checked...
2/3, lucky that neither of them was broken, as my broody - Rusty - has started playing 'musical eggs'. When I got home at lunchtime she was sitting on Blackie's egg in the other nest, and her broody nest was empty - the egg she is meant to be sitting on, plus Cinders' egg, were dumped on the...
2/3 today - saw Cinders lay hers as I lifted the coop lid to see if she was in there. I reached down and took it before it had even dried off, but afterwards I wondered what she must have thought when she turned round! "I'm sure I just laid an egg - where's it gone?"
Rusty's still broody...
2/3 today. Haven't been keeping up with the thread because Rusty's gone broody. She was stopping on the nest for a couple of hours at a time for two or three days, then finally decided not to come out at all. First broody I've had, so I'm probably worrying more than I should - she doesn't seem...
3/3 again!
And even better, 0/3 escapees into the front garden and next door's kitchen garden! I think I may finally have plugged all the holes and easy bits they were getting through. Oh, and 40 m of electric fencing along the little stone wall they climb over has probably had a bit of an...
Only 2/3 again - not quite sure who's laying what, as here was a lot of 'musical nest boxes' going on this morning. Only the left hand side nest box is acceptable to my girls for some bizarre reason. The right hand one seems virtually invisible to them! One chook will wait outside the coop...
Only 2/3, but both laid before 8.30 am. Looks like Cinders has taken the day off, as it's 6.45pm now, and they'll be in by 7.15pm. Still, as Meatloaf says, "two out of three ain't bad".
2/3, (nothing from Cinders, but that's no real surprise) but that's not bad for soggy damp girls on a grey day with virtually non-stop rain. In fact I think that the only time it stopped raining today was when it started to hail!
Were you washing them to use them straight away? I was always told not to wash them until you're just about to use them, and even then only to do it if they're really dirty and risk contaminating the contents. (Something to do with the egg shell being porous, and if you wash them you risk...
Hmmm only 1/3 today. Maybe being chased by the neighbour's dog the day before yesterday has had more of an effect than I thought Or maybe they're suffering the same as bruceha's flock - three gorgeous days with lovely warm sunshine, then woke up to a sprinkling of snow and a freezing north...
Another 2/3 day, but I'm not surprised.
Rusty went walkabout into the forbidden front garden this morning. The neighbours were walking their dogs, and one of their Scottish Terriers decided that a chicken in my front garden was more interesting than a morning walk! He chased her into the...
And of course pride comes before a fall - having boasted of my girls' recent 100% record, today only 2/3 (and one of those really late this afternoon)!
It's probably because we've had a few lovely warm days, and today has been grey, cold with a biting wind, and they've forecast minus...
