I'm just "going with the flow" on this one. We have only had chickens since this past spring and I figure that if they want to share a space, so be it. It is a little hard to reach under to get the eggs though so I bought a child's hoe and keep it in the coop. It makes it very easy to scoop out...
I left two eggs in a container on the deck while I went in to "fluff up" the sandbox and add some poultry dust. Came back and had only one egg. Hmmmmmm..... Yup, one of the dogs toon the other one. Well, now I know I can't just leave them laying for even a few minutes when the dogs are out!; )
We got 9 from 12 Saturday. 5 on Sunady and 6 today. Beautiful shades of brown with one of the girls laying a beautiful brownish reddish almost- all are a bit on the small side but I'm not complaining! We have even gotten a couple of double Yorkers. Considering we just got the girls in id-March...
Got our first eggs Thursday- 6 from 12 Golden Comet hens. Yesterday evening we had two small eggs but our girls are only 16 weeks old so I think we are in good shape!
Beginners question- do they lay in the morning, at night, or just whenever they are moved to do so?
