    This is actually very important to do. Mites are tiny VERY tiny. I keep clean coops. My birds DID get mites. Passing wild birds, rodents and such can and will bring nasties in. Worth checking since they could still be there a year from now even if temps get super cold.

    Chickens are weird! I would not remove the roost. Mine seem to use their outside roost more in the winter for that morning sun. Maybe need to put them in the coop at night and close the door. Let them out in the mornings and repeat until they get it. Just curious.... How much headspace is...

    I think measuring how high the outside roost is and how high the inside roost would be from the ground may reveal the answer. If the outside roost is higher think about lowering it.
