Addiedunn, there's no need to worry about those silkies, really. They're probably the warmest of any living species around, including me. They have a GE 60-watt black reptile heat bulb about 18 inches above them. It's so warm under there that they spend most of their time outside the...

Rimshoes, sorry to hear about your losses. Hopefully, the "youngins" will be okay with the silkies if they all cooperate and huddle together. My two silkies, mother and almost grown chick, have always slept on the floor right next to one another. Their not roosting up high makes it...

Lunachick, I'm looking forward to your post with pictures showing what and how you built the box and your account of how it works. Will you be sure to email or message me when you post it? I want to be sure that I don't miss it. Thanks

Inside temperatures of the two coops

Three hens and rooster roosting five feet up
Temperature transmitter on wall five feet up
South...

I forgot to mention that I also went to several electrical supply stores hoping to buy a T-2 Thermocube, but none of them carried them. It was too late to...
I spent all day yesterday going from one store to the next looking for two heaters with a thermostat that would come on at 15 degrees to put in my two 4x8 coops. Never found one. Finally settle on trying lights. Right now the Orpington coop has a red heat lamp that I originally had for when...
