Anyone in the Atlanta area with Cream Legbar hatching eggs for sale? I'm trying to get in a hatch before fall. I'd love to set a dozen this weekend if possible.
Oops I should have clicked on your link first! That poster was exactly what I thought about when I saw the question, too. Not a president, but "Uncle Sam".
Bummer. :(
Last winter (my first winter after I bought my home) the PVC pipes in the barn froze and burst. I wasn't able to find the water shutoff in time for the freeze so I insulated them with foam, but it wasn't enough. One day I'll fix it, having water out there was really convenient...
I would just have figured a place like Greenfire would have a million-dollar walk-in state-of-the-art incubator for their super expensive rare breed eggs instead of leaving them in a box full of hay, haha.
Just saw this video from Greenfire Farms, in which eggs are hatched with what looks like just a heat lamp. Is that even possible?? Or do you think it's just "video magic".
I'm pretty sure mine are done with their molt but I've been getting 0 eggs. I think the days are just too short now and they've quit for the winter. I have a light in the coop that I could adjust to give them at least 14 hours of light, I might gradually start pushing their bedtime back, haha.
YES.
The BYC mobile website on my phone has become pretty much unreadable due to the ads that hijack my browser and either open the Google Play Store so I can buy some poker app or take me to a product's website. It's REALLY irritating. I'm thinking of posting in the feedback forum.
I would candle outside, putting the eggs in a temporary container with a towel maybe, candling one at a time and putting them back under her. Less traveling = less risk of dropping/breaking eggs. Just make sure not to candle too close to her, I had a broody snap at my hand while I was candling...
Hey North Georgia people, how's the Fall foliage looking? I'm headed up to Asheville for a sheep and wool fair Saturday morning. I'll be winding through the mountains to get there, picking up hatching eggs and taking in the scenery on my way. :)
I just had a dangerous thought. If I keep my Welsummer rooster: I have two Welsummer hens that could give me Welsummer chicks, and I also have Ameraucana hens that could give me Olive Egger chicks...
It's tempting, I may be trying out one of those no-crow collars soon, haha.
I think, much like hand knitting, uninitiated people don't realize how much time and effort goes into that first egg.
It's beautiful olive egg! What did you cross to get it?
Well there was one upside to today: after fighting bumper to bumper traffic through Atlanta all the way back home, I was too tired to put my chickies back in their brooder so I chucked them all in with my big ladies. ZERO FIGHTS. They're one big family now. My grow-out pen adjacent to the coop...
At the swap at TSC in Ft. Oglethorpe. So far everyone's telling me how pretty and healthy my birds are but no one's buying, haha.
Edit: Well that was a total bust. :-P
