This is our first year keeping chickens so I don't have anything to compare it to but I have certainly lost more than I was expecting. Since Easter we have taken in 25 chicks, re-homed 5 cockerels, lost 6 pullets to predators (3 to fox, 1 to cat, 2 to hawk), after re-homing or slaughtering the 7...- themoldypeach

I say SNAKE. They are moving like crazy here. We have found 3 in a week & my neighbors down the block found 4 snakes in 2 days. Pictures of huge rattlesnakes are making the rounds, but luckily we have only found garden snakes. Getting ready for winter, perhaps. Sorry about your lose.- themoldypeach

Wyandottes - can't believe I left that part out! I drug home an old dog house the other day so I could separate them from the rest of the flock & restore peace to chickdom. LF? Is that large fowl? I need to re-home 2 Gold-laced roos. They are 2 rowdy little boys (I imagine them making fart jokes, pulling ponytails, and revving their engines when they spin their wheels), but alas they are driving my hens nuts. Good stock.- themoldypeach

I have read so much about cocci lately, I don't know where I read it, but chickens that free-range a lot are less likely to suffer from a cocci overload b/c they have built up an immunity. Hooray! My pullets came home! I thought the hawk took them but he only scared them off. When we came home tonight, they were here! Scared but ok. So 1 beheaded Wyandotte but everyone else ok. So my chickens outside ok. My chicks in the brooder....I think we got cocci, folks.- themoldypeach
