Hi @Kat C :frow Welcome To BYC!
Did you post on the wrong thread? I'm not quite sure to whom you are referencing about Marek's? If you are helping with this thread, the cause of death has been solved. It's very sad really. Come to find out that the heat lamp being used was Teflon coated...
Mr. Rooster doesn't seem to mind too much - LOL
Since I lost my fella, the girls spread out everywhere, when he was living everyone pushed in on one roost, even in summer, they all looked a bit miserable panting in the summer heat, but if I moved any of them right back to smushing they would...
@Marge Carlson :frow Hi Welcome To BYC
I don't believe that the OP mentioned whether or not birds were vaccinated. Unfortunately, vaccination would not have any bearing on this particular situation. This is a very long thread, so it's understandable if no one reads it in it's entirety...
Good idea Kathy - toes do bleed a lot. And that blood does look fresh.
@AaronandAlice the video is great:) Totally normal behavior to me, they love to dig.
This is the photo I pulled, but I see in another one there are 2girls with similar look bums - are those swollen?
I probably missed it...
Can you scoop that bigger piece out (and a few smaller pieces) and put them on a white paper towel and re photograph?
It looks like it might be intestinal shedding, but...there is quite a bit, maybe from more than one? Anyway, I'm sure @TwoCrows and @casportpony will chime in, unless they...
Slightly off topic (maybe). We all have hear about the "canary in the coal mine" Miners used canaries to warn them of dangerous toxins/low oxygen in mine - bird up and dies, you get out of there.
So.....If it's known (Google Teflon poisoning or toxicity in birds) that Teflon emits toxic fumes...
She is lovely. Do you have her inside so she can be warmed? I see you mentioned that she has frost on her beak? If you can't bring her in, can you place a heating pad under her?
I agree, that a round of antibiotics may be helpful - so have so many suggestions, sometimes it's hard to weed...
:hugs:hugs
I'm sorry to hear this.
The hen - will she drink if you place a small cup to her beak?
Is she having trouble breathing?
I've been looking into this a little and there is no treatment for Teflon Toxicity or PTFE poisoning/toxicosis The only thing to do would try to keep her warm...
Thank you for sharing the photo with us.
Again, I'm so very sorry. Please don't beat yourself up - concentrate on your remaining birds to see if you can get them to rally.
Let us know how it goes.
Info about the Teflon really does need to be stickied somewhere or featured - admin and/or staff have to create stickies, so maybe @DuckLady or @TwoCrows can help with that.
I'm so very sorry :hugs
It sounds like you have found the culprit.
Nice investigative work everyone.
If there is any way to bring in the remaining birds that would be a good idea. If not, then open your coop windows and doors to let in some fresh air. It's hard to know what else to do...
