Topic of the Week - "Off-grid" Feeding - Homemade feeds, etc.

My garden has been taken over by weeds! I looked them up and they are Lambsquarters. Apparently similar to spinach in nutrition. My chickens LOVE them, so I am going to try to dehydrate the leaves and save them for winter supplemental feeding. They need to be removed from the garden anyway...

I will post a photo as soon as I get one, it was freezing rain for the last couple of days and I didn't get out there with a camera. I like that it keeps the stems in one place for easy clean-up. It also makes it easy to remove those weeds that they will not eat.

I used a scrap piece of fencing (about 12"x18") on the outside of the fence for the run. It is wired to the fence along the bottom so it hinges up and down. When I pull tall weeds, I lay them on the scrap fence and hinge it up so the weeds are flat against the run fence. The chickens will...

That's what I thought. I will need to find a corner somewhere to stack a couple of bales. Once the last of the stuff in the barn is gone, I will need to buy some for the chooks for winter. The area of the barn where hay is now, is going to be renovated into a heated workout room.

Would a root cellar be a good place to store hay, or would that be too humid? We have a pile of old hay in the haymow that I am going to move to the run this weekend. It is horse hay, so just a little bit of alfalfa, but a lot of stems and leaves of birds-foot trefoil, grass, weeds, etc. I...

Easy to grow ingredients also. Do you use the steamed rolled oats for convenience or because they are easier to digest? Is the soybean meal a cooked soybean product or just milled soybeans? EDIT: I looked it up, most soybean meal is a by-product of oil extraction and is a "cooked" product...

One thing I am working on is building a cabinet-type solar dehydrator. One that has a collector made of popcans painted black attached to a solid wood cabinet that contains a number of stainless steel racks. I want to dehydrate extra greens for the chickens, something that I can add to the run...

I grew a small garden in Wyoming while we were there. Tomatoes did really good, as did my bush zucchini, peas, beans and spinach. The trick was to have a grow house - something to keep the wind off the plants and keep the humidity in. What you need is one of those Geodesic Dome greenhouses!
