I’m sorry. I had a loss of two hens resulting in my first Roo being left alone; that’s how I wound up getting another Roo; but I’m thinking now I Should have gotten both brothers, because they’re not J Giants so neither is big enough to rein in my Orp’s bullying. I’m currently alternating days...

Yes, the friend who gave me Andy thought he might be a JG, but her daughter checked the color on the bottoms of his feet and said not. He’s a full grown Astralorp, with the pretty full crow to match, but he’ll not get bigger enough to take on my bully Orp. I love the deep dark green tones in...

@FortCluck Squatch is exactly the same color and look as my Astra Andy.... who is also Not the boss, my Orp Lance has turned into a real bully.:( I’m going to have to split the big garden in the spring, so Andy will have more area. He’s safe in a covered 10x15 kennel for now.

Only because it’s much closer to any predators, Plus I’m old and a bit tubby, so it’s harder for me to get to! I suppose I feel it’s less secure if it takes longer for me to get to it than it does the predators.

Close call! I fell asleep in my chair before dark today, and woke hours later to realize I hadn’t closed up our boys! got up immediately and went out with a lantern.. just in time I guess! I saw a small furbearing creature run off from the edge of our kennel enclosure inside the garden.! Thank...

i have to admit, I separated them because the new guy had a bloody comb and was hiding waaaay over in a far corner of the garden where he could get his head partly out of the deer fence. I was worried that he’d get stuck and be vulnerable to a predator out of our vision, so I built the kennel...

@RoostersAreAwesome we got a bit of snow here too; I have two Roos who’re sharing an up/down duplex inside an old raised-beds garden. The coop and run are screwed securely down to a solid wooden deck, but the garden has just deer fencing and no top netting except over a dog kennel to make a...

Ahh, the Up/Down Duplex! This pic is from a couple of days ago; right now everyone’s asleep, or at least cuddled up in their shelters safe and warm away from the cold and snow and freezing rain!

Great assortment of names! Are your guys all different breeds/colors, or are they similar? I especially like Cheeto and the god’s names. One of our Silkies was named Grimm when we thought they were cockerels.

Hey, I have a question for everyone! (Might’ve been asked before, of course!) How did you choose the names for your roosters ? We adore a British tv series called The Detectorists, and the two main characters are Lance and Andy!

Here’s my boys! Lance (Lavender Orpington) is larger than Andy (Astralorp), just a tad farther away in the pics

Here’s the bigger pic of my Orpington Lance! Those are standard size hen boxes, but I’ve taken the separators out so the coop is a open plan with one side solid floor and the rest roosting bars over a large removable drawer. I think the coop might be larger than 3’x3’, I need to measure it again!

Hi! Thank you for the advice! Only roosters. We just got our new guy today; I suggested to the previous owner getting one at a time or only one since she has 10 hens and I would prefer only two big boys due to the coop size. She liked the idea of keeping one, plus they turned out to be Astras...

Thanks! I only have the one coop, so I think I’ll need to put at least a kennel-type shelter in the garden. I can close it up and place that inside the run when the big guy goes to roost... of course this all depends on how big the Jerseys are already. I’ll keep you posted!

Hi! I’m new to this site, found your article on Rooster Flocks, so thank you.! I have one Orpington who’s just come through his first moult , and I’m looking at adding two Jersey Giant cockerels from a local friend... do I need a separate coop? I have one that’s about 3’x3’ above a run that...
