Yeah, I was shocked myself! I'll feel up all the zip ties at the store now (lol) and do a little trial and report back. I'm not that thrilled with the spirals anyway, they lost all their color pretty quickly.
Having read through all these comments, I think the key might be getting a real, heavy duty tie that has good, aggressive teeth. The first time I used zip ties, I got some from my dad in his shop, and he buys good ones. The ones I bought were light and thin, I hadn't thought about durability...
I can't remember the brand, I know I picked them up at either Wal-Mart or Rural King. Only thing different than when I used zip ties previously is these ones I bought were smaller. Maybe a little bigger has better teeth?
When I put them on, I cut the excess flush. When I checked later, there...
I have posted the details twice in this thread.
4 month old Barred Rock pullets, four of them.
Zip tie attached loose enough to swivel, yet not so loose as to fall off. Cut flush with tab using sidecutters.
Applied approximately 5pm.
All found very tight on the legs the next morning.
Cut them...
Yes, I've seen it mentioned quite a bit in various FB groups I'm in as well, so it does indeed happen. Is there any particular brand or attribute one should look for when purchasing zip ties? I would like to be able to use them still, they just make me nervous now.
I will concede that it's possible I got a bad bag of ties, but the implication that I'm lying is a little off-putting. And I do perform a visual inspection of each bird twice every single day.
I used sidecutters, it baffled me too, believe me. It's just not worth it to me anymore. I have time to give them a lookover twice a day, so I can watch to see if the spiral leg bands move, but I don't have time to consistently catch and cut a zip tie off every day.
Yes, the zip ties tightening surprised me too, but it really happened, three days in a row. I cut them as short as I could, and they'd be tight every morning. And I put them on loose. And my chickens don't have a foot disease, Lol.
I'm using colored orthodontic rubber bands for chicks now and...
Zip ties worked fine for me, until they didn't. For whatever reason, the last new birds I got, every time I put a tie on them, they were super tight the next morning. At first I thought they were pulling on the end themselves, so made sure to cut it super close. Still super tight. I don't...
