That's what I've always used. Hardwood ashes (oak, pecan, hickory) from the grill. Make sure they are cold, and put about a shovel full in each dirt bath hole, mix it around. It not only keeps the creepy crawlies away, it helps absorb the sweat on the birds skin and keeps them clean.
