I use tweezers, but not to grab onto to pull off the shell fragments. I use one side only of the tweezers and gently slide it under the edge of the shell to loosen it all around the outer edges until comes loose. You don't want to pull off any feathers.
I checked it daily. I took it off after 7 days to replace it, if needed. The chick was running around just fine without it, so I didn't have to do it again.
This treatment was successful for my splay legged chick.
2" Bandaid cut long ways.
Wrap one half around one leg.
Wrap the other around the second leg, attaching it to the first.
I used a bit of tape in the center to prevent the two pieces from separating.
