I just googled it and you can actually just use some fresh ginger from your local grocery store (I would actually try Whole Foods for this). Check out this out. Apparently you can grow it indoors in New England. I may have to give this a try.

I've never tried growing it because think it might need a more hospitable climate than northern Massachusetts. Have you spoke to someone at your local gardening center? That's where I would start. Good luck.
