Another broody sitting 8 eggs from assorted breeds. She will hatch them on or around April 21. She is doing very well and is very dedicated to the job.
Two more broodies on nests starting today! I will load them up with eggs as the week progresses, as I do not want anymore hens of their breed right now. I am putting the biggest and best eggs under them and hope for the best. I want more hens that lay those extra large dark brown eggs.....
WE HAVE HATCH! Two out, one cracked, one pipping, two not started.
One black (BA or BS mix), one gray (Blue Orp roo/ ? hen).
The chicks look great! Mama is a great mom and has done a great job.
I will try to get pics when they are completely hatched!
Not to mention....the hen uses less electricity! If it works, great! If it doesn't, oh, well? Not like having 40 eggs at once go to waste....just a small clutch of eggs that momma will hatch, care for, keep warm, etc. No worries!
My broody discarded two more eggs. Down to eight now! The two she discarded had no chicks in them, so I would gather this was an appropriate move for her, since they are due to hatch around March 9th.
Same here! This broody doesn't have to go far for food and water...right next to her nest...and I can't catch her off it. Even if I did, my broody pen is small and I think she would really be upset if she saw me touching her eggs. All the eggs under her were freshly laid, so they aren't old...
I have a new broody due to hatch around March 9th. She has only been sitting for about a week. I tried giving her some additional eggs about 3 days into the sit, but she tossed them out. Last count I had was around 9 eggs after she disposed of the two extra.
I am not even going to candle...
