Do they look like my duck in the middle/bottom of the pic, next to my roo? She's a blue fawn, has a brownish head and blue body with brown lacing almost :)
Yes, but did you read it, Kathy?
"We amend the regulations to
prohibit sale, transfer, or propagation of
muscovy ducks for hunting and any
other purpose other than food
production"
If you raise them for food (meat/eggs) it's fine here, I know. It's certainly not a federal jurisdiction issue. Funny how D.C. really likes to over reach.
Did you pull the first bunch of eggs? I read that the fertility is a little iffy in the first 3-5 eggs a duck lays in a season.
Also, how long have the girls been setting? I wouldn't get discouraged until about 10 days and no development.
Are they setting on the eggs ALL day long? Or are they...
Well, I'd say that in 2 years of trying, this is Ducky's first successful clutch! Some of the eggs (not sure if they were hers or ones I pulled from another Muscovy nest) were Mules, so 4 hatched early and resulted in a day off the nest, but after I pulled the mulelings that the ravens didn't...
Once they get on a feeding schedule with you, they won't leave. I have 4 scovies now, and they can all fly off- but they don't because I feed them the good stuff. :) You could try clipping their wings at first to train them to walk instead of fly, that might work. I don't think you'll need to...
He looks like a Mule duck to me (Muscovy X mallard-based duck). If you want to see for sure, isolate him with a few girls (unless he's your only drake) and when they lay eggs, incubate a few from after the first couple eggs. If he's a Mule duck, the eggs won't be fertile and won't develop :)
Oh wow! I think my ducks are destined to be sad and outdoors... I have a human baby so I already change a good amount of diapers each day. And duck poo? Eesh! You're stronger than I!!
I'm not sure if they're from the same clutch, I just asked for "A blue and a chocolate" and that's what they brought me. I love the Blue Fawn color, I'd just like to know for sure if it's a duck or drake! Lol I realize if this is my biggest problem today I have a super easy life. It's just...
The BF is between the Choc and my White drake size-wise and with leg thickness. My White boy has been getting beat up by someone, I just haven't witnessed it yet, but he has started looking totally haggard in the last week.
White drake is 4 years old.
These two are the same age. Last...
Okay, I think I have figured out why I'm only getting 1 Muscovy egg/day now that Ducky (my first Duck) is brooding...
That's my Blue Fawn on top of my Chocolate... Ducks don't do that to one another, right? So my Blue Fawn's a drake? =/
PS Sorry about the snow- we have a little blizzard...
Were the Muscovies kept with other ducks? the one with less red looks like she may be a mule duck (mix of Muscovy and Mallard based). Mule Ducks are sterile.
I feel really weird about this, but I got a video of my drake breeding one of my ducks today. Debating whether or not I should upload it to my blog for people who have never seen it before. Thoughts? I mean, it's an interesting process and I would like the video to be on the more educational...
I bought a floating duck house (doesn't float too well, turns out) but my ducks never went in there, so now the sheep use it. I'll try the dog house :)
