My birds are good, but they are tired of this weather. They don't like the wind and snow. Out of 25 hens the only one laying is my turken olive egger. That is OK if they take a break though. They need to save their energy and keep warm!
I finally figured out a way to post my pictures!
After a year and a half trying to get an olive egg, I finally have an olive egger! One of my project turkens is laying amazing olive eggs. She is the only one that has a pea comb (although it is a modified pea) and her two sisters lay dark...
Those are some super cute pullets, Jax. I have my first potential splash chicks in the incubator now. Hoping for some gorgeous chicks in the near future!
They are beautiful pullets, but I agree they are probably polish/Marans crosses. I have a lot of legbar crosses and none of them have crests like those pullets. You should get eggs pretty soon. Let us know!
It's going well! Yesterday I got 9 eggs, and one of them was olive! It is my first olive egg (and I've been trying for a year and a half). I took pics, but for some reason I'm having trouble posting on this site. I'll try again later.
You can find purebred Ameraucanas that are considered EEs because they are a non-standard color. You can also find EEs that are homozygous for blue egg genes are lay eggs that are just as pretty as show-quality Ameraucanas. Everyone has their own goals for their chickens. Mine is awesome egg...
A legbar rooster over a BCM hen does not produce sex-linked chicks. The rooster will pass the barring gene to all of his offspring regardless of their gender.
Of course my legbar rooster was defective and only had one barring gene. Even in that situation, he could still produce both male...
Our rooster was 7 months old when we got him. At first he only had a half dozen younger hens that he was successfully fertilizing. Now he's over a year old and almost all of his 20 hens are laying fertile eggs. I've seen him fertilize three different girls in a 5 minute period. Apparently...
For 7 weeks old, they both look like cockerels. My 12 week old pullets are completely colorless in the face still. My 16 week old OE pullets are just starting to turn pink.
The prettiest/friendliest ones are always cockerels! LOL I had one that started to get a red comb at 10 days and he was crowing at 4 weeks. Talk about hormone imbalance! At 2 months he was mounting the older pullets. We still have him, but we'll be culling when he's a bit bigger. I don't...
I agree that the Araucanas in the pics are probably not pure by any means. In the U.S. Araucanas should be rumpless and most breeding stock has tufts (not sure where you are). They still may be homozygous for blue egg genes, but you won't know until you breed them.
Brown egg genes are NOT...
My "olive egger" has a tiny little pea comb and lays brown eggs. You definitely can't tell by the comb if your bird carries the blue egg gene. I wish there were a way to test egg color genetics, but comb type isn't reliable.
I'd guess the first one is a cockerel and the other two could be pullets. Your pictures are dark though and it is hard to tell.
Since they are barred, at least one parent had to be barred. They could be from cuckoo Marans or from Legbar lines. I'd guess the cockerel is a Legbar x Marans...
