I absolutely agree that a source like this can be an excellent stockpile of genetic material. We also need to remember that Duane ran a HATCHERY, and while he may have selected a bit more carefully towards the standard, his breeding flocks would have been very similar to what we see in the...
Yeah i wouldn't feel comfortable selling hatching eggs or chicks, either. If I'm going to set it and hatch it I'm going to grow it out so i can select from it. Years and years down the road when I'm seeing consistency in my lines and know i can get what i need for the next breeding season...
The issue has always been marketing, whether that's what it was called or not. The well-known poultry keepers that were networked and made themselves visible and talked their birds up built reputations. There were likely plenty of birds or breeds that were just as good that fell by the wayside...
Duane Urch at Turnland Poultry was an APA judge that ran more or less a hatchery dedicated to standardbred birds. He was the only real go-to resource outside of commercial hatcheries for several breeds, including my beloved Houdans, and was a popular go-to for 4-H kids and others seeking quality...
@The Moonshiner you're right. I didn't anticipate it taking this turn. To me the general subject matter was rather obvious, I didn't see it going off on a tangent about people that kept chickens as pets since it was about BREEDING AND SHOWING APA POULTRY.
I tried to edit the original post but...
I just don't see it that way and I don't think it's really relevant to the particular conversation at hand. They've been selling dyed easter chicks as long as they've been selling easter bunnies. They're terrible pets. Everyone I know that sells Easter rabbits sells them with an unconditional...
Joseph Marquette, the author of the original piece I shared, is Yellow House Farm (who I can't seem to tag.)

Here is another interesting 2018 article by Mr. Marquette...
But if those people are not now and never will be breeding at all, how is it part of the current conversation.
I mean... did the potbelly pig movement get people all scared that someday nobody would be able to have anything but pet pigs? Do Easter bunnies prevent meat and show rabbit breeders...
I dunno, I'm not going to indulge that conversation here in a forum specifically designated to encourage keeping chickens as a sort of backyard companion. It doesn't seem to be what this diatribe is addressing one way or another. I know for a FACT that some casual "pet" chicken keepers get...
Certainly this gives me pause as I look out the window at my Isabel leghorns while making arrangements to bring home brown and silver leghorns, but I also think there is something contradictory in this message from Mr. Marquette.
His whole lament stems from the loss of two major programs...
To me the gist is that we need to try to circle the wagons and save "the most valuable" and "most important" breeds and varieties. It was definitely very pointedly regarding some of the great in-depth efforts I saw start here in these forums.
I just came across this post on Facebook from A YEAR AGO and could find no mention of it when I search the forum, but this seems MAJOR. Can we talk about this post? I feel it's important:
