HOLD THE PRESSES: Duane Urch is Done?!/Future of American Purebred Poultry

I think you've made some good points. Sadly preserving history isn't what it used to be. Society has become more selfish. It's more about the here and now now days. What I have and what I want is the priority. Gimme gimme gimme and I'll throw it away soon and get something better. When I was...

HOLD THE PRESSES: Duane Urch is Done?!/Future of American Purebred Poultry

Buckeyes were created by Nettie Metcalf. The only American class breed to be created entirely by a woman. (That in itself should be worth something historically.) Anyways at that time she was the buckeye breed. There weren't "breeders" it was her alone and the breed she created. She was...

Both breeds were developed separately but later stock were exchanged and both breeds used the other for improvement. The buckeye was actually renamed the pea comb rhode Island red to try to help its popularity. It was found that it was hurting its popularity so they went back to the name buckeye.

I've seen you make this point before and you always refer to it as the "Breeding to the SOP" forum. What you continue to miss is the rest of the title. It's the "Exhibition, Genetics, & Breeding to the SOP" section. The section is for questions and threads about genetics as much as it is about...

HOLD THE PRESSES: Duane Urch is Done?!/Future of American Purebred Poultry

Leave it to the country boy to take it on a hard right and do some off roading. My point was that the backyard chicken movement and the movement towards viewing chickens as pets is heading a lot of people away from the concept of breeding and showing poultry as well as any efforts to conserve...

HOLD THE PRESSES: Duane Urch is Done?!/Future of American Purebred Poultry

I think it is fine as part of the conversation and I think it is relevant but then again your original post was so long winded, boring and not exactly clear what the discussion was to be about. I took it as the decline in poultry breeding to conserve breeds. But then again I'm a hillbilly and I...

HOLD THE PRESSES: Duane Urch is Done?!/Future of American Purebred Poultry

The main difference with the pot belly pig movement was that it was the PB pig movement not an all pig movement. PBs were a pig meant to be eaten but most don't consider them as a meat pig now. Although that movement didn't change the views on pigs as a whole it sure change the views of pot...

HOLD THE PRESSES: Duane Urch is Done?!/Future of American Purebred Poultry

I think you can't see the forest for the trees. This mindset has been around for a long long time. I dealt with it in the 70s and early 80s. Have things went downhill since then? Yes of course but there's a bigger problem that has been snowballing for a decade or so and it's what is ruining the...
