The 4x4" goat fencing will contain most large breed adult chickens, not juveniles, and not good for horse fencing either.

Ours, not so much. Without electric tape or rope on the top, nothing would be left, and even so, the horses and cattle know how to 'age' it very effectively. It only looks new for a while...

Because our fencing has to work for horses too, we have mostly the 2x4" woven wire 'no climb' horse fencing. The one area at the lot line where only larger dogs and chickens matter, the 4x4" goat fencing works well (except for the juvenile bantams).

Don't buy stuff at the garden center! Go to a farm supplies store, and Premier1supplies.com for electric fencing supplies.
We use the 8' treated posts, some 6" diameter, and cross braces with 4" posts. It all depends on what you are building! Our tposts are closer to 10' apart too.

There's a very good book, soft cover, on fencing for livestock. It's available online, and it's our best reference. Whenever we 'cheated' on the instructions given, it didn't go well.
