I'll add that my Belgian d'Uccles, who have a fair amount of foot and leg feathering, do just fine running around on my farm. They don't have to wallow in mud, but there is some, especially in spring.
Marans, as has been mentioned, aren't feathered much at all.

Clean legged cuckoo Marans are not the same as the feather legged French Marans, which come in several colors, including cuckoo. They will all lay darker colored eggs than the clean legged birds sold as cuckoo Marans by some hatcheries.

My wheaton Marans from Cackle lay dark eggs, and I do like them, but most people say that the black copper variety tends to have the darkest eggs. The clean legged cuckoo Marans tend to have lighter colored eggs; stick to the French Marans.
