If feed stores closed and you can’t free range...

You do understand this is an imaginary scenario? The chickens, the city roof, the feelings toward the imaginary chickens, all imaginary. It’s just a scenario for interesting discussion.

Just a reminder. This thread is for fun first of all. It’s to get ya thinking outside the box. Second it’s to share ideas which is what the BYC whole site is about. What it isn’t is a prediction of doom. Things have happened in this world that have made this thread more serious than I originally...

Oh my goodness! If you had any idea how hard it was to find this post of my pictures!! The 459th post in the second long thread I searched for it. But here it is. You don’t have to use a bed frame. Just make a frame...

Yes of course. But boiling them rather than crockpot cooking is important. I really thought cooked beans was what those warnings were about. Odd, I’m usually pretty thorough about checking such things.

Mine too! I was planning to dehydrate some leaves for medicinal purposes.

You’re right! I’ve just read “don’t feed them beans, they’re toxic...” and I never noticed the art that said “To make them safe for both humans and chickens, beans should be soaked in cold water for at least five hours - preferably longer. Then, discard the water, rinse the beans rinsed...

If this thread is helpful to anyone who is experiencing a hardship, be it virus, financial, location, whatever, then be blessed by it in Jesus name. So what about weeds? They have lots of seeds. Maybe there are some that would be good to cultivate just for the chickens. Hmmmm! A garden plot...

I do the same thing. Well, I do eliminate beans since those are toxic for chickens. And I know they won’t eat citrus foods like oranges and such, they just don’t like them I guess. But none of that is a problem. That bit goes into the compost pile.

There are 4 imaginary hens of standard size. The entire imaginary roof is 150x150. The imaginary coop and run take up one third of the roof. Why panic? It’s all imaginary. Just have fun.

Fun. This isn’t about who’s gonna die of the current plague. Its just a discussion. It’s just for fun. If there was no c-virus happening BUT somehow there was no grain available AND you aren’t willing to thin the flock AND it’s a tiny flock anyway AND you live in an inner city apartment with...

Aw c’mon guys. This was supposed to be fun. That’s why I started out saying I don’t want it to start a panic. Sure that’s what started me thinking about such things, but I started thinking up some cool things and thought I’d share the fun!

Yeah, I agree. And I know that he virus is on everyone’s mind. But I just wonder what you would do IF. I don’t believe such a scenario is one we need to contemplate seriously, but during a quiet moment as my mind wandered I wondered what would happen in a zombie apocalypse with no chicken feed...

Now we’re thinking! Good ideas! Hmmmm. Could chickens be allowed to pick through compost at will? Maybe that’s where the compost pile needs to live?

What you would do for your geese I already do for my chickens. They eat weeds and grass clippings and kitchen scraps and garden failures. So why get rid of chickens? Remember the parameters of the discussion is about someone who cannot freerange and won’t get rid of them. Maybe imagine they live...

I do not want to start a panic, rather a conversation. No I haven’t heard rumors of feed shortages. Yes we all are aware of the virus situation in the United States and everywhere in the world. Just for the sake of conversation If someone needs to decide to stop buying feed and could not free...
