Diana- a swift kick to the chest could be what happened to wheezy. Once when I was integrating RIR offspring into parent coop when all were the same size one of the momma hens did the ninja kick to the chest of the most submissive daughter. Happened so fast I was dumbstruck!

Diana- how's the ventilation in your coop? It sounds like you've done a lot for her and things are going well other than dealing with her frenemies:-)

I haven't been on in a long time- so much goes on! Sweet mint is planted in raised beds around some of my coops. When I see parts growing towards the ground outside of the bed I just pluck it off for tea. Keep a watch around the raised bed to make sure it isn't trying to be sneaky and escape to...

Someone near you could be putting out poison for them so be careful about chickens getting them.

Perhaps if it is warmer now they like the cool breeze? Funny how chickens seem to know what you intend so they do the opposite! They followed instinct and went to the highest spot. I added extra roosts in one coop due to adding 2 older girls temporarily (adjustments for broodies). Yeah, well...

Moles maybe? But they don't usually come above ground. It would be hilarious to see a mole with a big pepper plant! Do yall have groundhogs up there?

They are here to stay. Been here many years- took out neighbor's beehive 2 winters ago, saw a nice size one down the road scratching a tree last Spring, a hunter killed one of the 2 young ones last year and this one was small enough that mom may have let him go on alone for this year's cub. They...

My youngest daughter and I encountered a bear this evening! We were making our way back up from collecting eggs with daughter talking her sweet chatter the whole time and all of a sudden I grabbed her hand and stopped. Bear was standing right in the driveway leading to my chickens and hog! I...

Momma fox teaching kits perhaps? Diana- that is an awesome coop! You did a great job on it. Hardware cloth over the Windows right? You wanna come build a double one of those for me?

Man that's tough. Perhaps a monthly pick up and check can keep any future problems in check. I had a BO boy that got bumblefoot after I put hay with "stickers" in the run. Thorn got in his foot which resulted in bumblefoot. The first day (with kid's help) we soaked the foot and picked a bit...

Look up threads on bumblefoot. You have to get it out like a pimple or it could cause permanent damage. Good luck.

Good job obn the raised bed! Odd box looks like a pure and beautiful heritage RIR. He has a good looking meat body to him. I was reading a bit on heritage and rose comb RIRs last year and thought it was quite interesting- it seems as they got bred into the production RIR the bodies got slimmer...

In the late morning/early afternoon after the morning chill is gone I'll unplug the heat lamp. My broody won't be on her chicks most of the day after morning chill/fog is gone so I follow her example. In the evening when ot cools off I plug the lamp up again. Sometimes the chicks cheep a bit at...

And shipped chicks get no additional heat during shipping yet they survive.

Broody mommas don't stay on their chicks all day long. Check out the broody hen thread- it's pretty awesome. When I first started out I went "by the book" but over the years I've learned to just watch the chicks for what they need. We try to imitate nature and then in time we think we're better...

Lol, I did the same thing with my very first set of chicks all those years ago! Not a tumor though, just a full crop. It's eating well!

Cool set up! I might have to try that myself to let the chickens peck away at the bugs

I'm so excited and happy- I have one OEGB Crele rocking in the bator! I am lucky to get 4 or 5 eggs per month from my show stock pair. Tried giving some to broodies and either the single bantam egg got smooshed or the pretend broody bug got the newby broodies. Only had 2 to go in the bator when...
