Yikes - sorry to hear about the poison oak. That must have been awful! The ticks are awful this year! I have lost count of how many I have gotten off of the dog and myself. (Thankfully only 2 were attached and not for long.) It is worse because I've been tackling japanese barberry removal in my...

Thanks! I managed to get some this AM.

Long shot, I realize... anyone within an hour of Portland have chicks? I had a broody hatch out two chicks, one of which she killed immediately and the other she rejected. :-( There are still 4 eggs under her but I'm not holding out hope that they are viable. I hate to brood one little chick alone!

Thanks, LG! I'm south of Portland, so a hike from you, but I will let you know. I'm going to candle these and see. :fl Enggass... I didn't know what the "ahhh" was! Figured it was exasperation with roos! :-)

My girls certainly don't miss him!! I miss his pretty colors, but wow it's nice and quiet!

Oh man! I waited all winter/spring for a hen to go broody... the minute I kill the rooster, there she goes! Hopefully the eggs will be fertile for a few more days. And thanks LG for the response on the fermented-smelling feed. The store would not take it back (I didn't expect them to). It was...

I just opened two bags of feed... they had been kept on a pallet for about a month. It smells overwhelmingly fermented. I shouldn't use this, right? I know some people use fermented feed, but I have no idea what caused this to go bad. Bummer, as I assume the store won't take it back.

Wow! Congrats to EDH on the catch! Hope your girls will be safe from now on! I saw a mink skulk away from my goat enclosure earlier this winter... creepy creatures, especially now that I know what damage they can cause. So relieved you got it, bucka!

I currently have 3 barred rocks, 1 golden wyandote, 2 jersey giants, 1 barnyard mutt bantam from the farm down the road, and 1 RIR rooster. I am really hoping my broody goes broody again this spring and I can set some of my own flock's fertile eggs under her. I would love some green/blue egg...

Bucka - that is awful what happened! I'm so glad the weasel didn't get the whole flock and that they seem to be staying out. Don't underestimate the fox!! I see them all the time here and they are so fast at grabbing and running. I literally cannot do even supervised free ranging here, because...

Oh my goodness yes! My rooster was spooked by the wind and he proceeded to crow about it all.day.long. The post-sunset quiet is nice. :-)

I'm several days late to the getting stuck in the coop conversation, but I did it twice before finally fixing the flaw with the door that allowed it happen! I was able to crawl through the pop door and get out through the run, but yuck!

Glad you got the hawk out! I have 4x4 wire over my run and it is about the same size as yours. The wire is attached to four wooden beams that go across - two across the length and two across the width. The coop and run came with our house... not sure what I would have come up with myself, but...

7 is great, bucka! I hope mine remaining two originals make it that long!

Hard to believe it looking outside, but the sun feels warmer by the day! I don't hatch myself, but if my broody goes broody, I am definitely sticking eggs under her! I'm hoping she goes around April or May... let it be reliably warmer. Had to put down one of my three remaining hens from my...

I don't have any advice, but I hope she gets better. It is so hard when they get sick. Sounds like you are doing everything you can!

http://www.bbc.com/earth/story/20170110-despite-what-you-might-think-chickens-are-not-stupid Love this article. Before 3 years ago I had never "met" a chicken and wouldn't have believed how smart and interactive they are.

Oh, how awful! If I had a broody, I'd totally stick it under her for you. She has just started laying again after hatching her chicks in September, though. Good luck with the little survivor!

Well, I feel silly... I thought one of my 3.5 month old roosters was attacking my hens. Nope, that's called mating. So brutal!! The worst part is that his favorite appears to be the sweet broody who raised him!
